A Thousand to One

Food for Thought

Dinner time came as me, Ivana, Bambi and Popcorn made our way to the main hall. Circular tables of eight had been set out with the chef’s waiting on a table each. We made our way to a half full table with four Japanese girls, who gladly allowed us to sit there. As soon as we were sat and told the chef what we would like to eat, Ivana stood up and walked off to another table of younger girls. Confused, I looked at Bambi and Popcorn; they both shrugged.

“Probably seen someone she knows.” Popcorn averted her eyes from mine and started asking Bambi something to cover it up. We watched as Ivana thanked the girls and, instead of returning, walked to the next table and repeated her strange behavior.

I raised my eyebrow, “On every table?” I asked Popcorn, she knew something about this, I could feel it. Sera again, just shrugged; I was about to press her about it when Ivana returned and our food was served. Ivana smirked at me, the mischief in her eyes not even hidden, I couldn’t help but smile. “Okay, what are you up to Ivana?” My remark only made her smile wider, like the cat that got all the cream.

“Later, when we’re back in the room.” She said to the three of us, I gave her a small glare as we eat our meal together. I couldn’t help but worry she might have said something about me to the other people, I’d always been paranoid like that; after all, I’d only known her for half a day.

Lost in thought, my eyes grazed along the other tables absentmindedly. There were younger campers laughing along with their counselors (each group of 6 had a staff member to look after them, mine was Julie) and a few tables with just staff. My eyes swept across to the other side, pretty much the same table formation, I could make out a few guys laughing at something; one of them looked quite awkward- I made a mental note of him then continued daydreaming.

Almost done with scanning the tables while eating, I spotted the last table. The table was half staff half campers, all the campers were boys and looked similar to my age; whereas with the staff two of them were girls.

As our plates were cleared and we waited for dessert, I couldn’t help but keep glancing back at the staff/camper table; it was then I realized why I didn’t notice the table earlier- Ivana had left the table out. Puzzled, I asked Ivana if she had, just to be sure; she looked at me then continued with a different conversation- what the hell? I kept asking her but she just kept doing the same thing, Popcorn caught my attention by poking me. I looked at her as she gestured to a piece of paper in her hand below the table; I grabbed it and unfolded the note.

‘Be Patient, Ivana won’t answer until after xx’

Right, now I was curious; I wouldn’t press her though, dessert was being served so I’d only have to wait about fifteen more minutes. Dessert came and as we tucked in, I couldn’t help but steal another glance at the mysterious table; this time my gaze was met by another pair of curious eyes. Not only that, but the same pair I’d seen in the music room. He was smiling, which made it even harder for my brain to thaw out, and I knew that if I didn’t look away soon I’d make a complete fool of myself. My cheeks were burning even more than earlier in the music room, his eyes felt like they were seeing right into my soul.
Bambi poked me under the table, it was just enough distraction for me to regain control of my brain, I looked away at her and muttered a thanks; that was the best bit about Bambi, I could communicate with her without talking- she just instantly knew if something was up.

We finished dessert and returned to our room, while I tried my best to avert my gaze from that table as best I could. My face was still heated from what had happened, why do I act so stupidly whenever he’s around? As we left through the doorway of the hall I let out a small sigh and followed the girls to our room. Preparing myself for the worst as to what Sera and Ivana were up to.

We finally got into the room, Popcorn and Ivana flopped on their beds while I walked round closing the thin white curtains. Just I was about to close the last curtain nearest to my bed, I noticed the view. There, lit by the silvery colour of moonlight was the music building; my fingers itched to play again, I wondered if they locked it at night. I closed the curtain and grabbed my pillow to rest on the floor, propping myself up to face the others.

“Right, curiosity’s got the better of me, what are you two up to?” I rest my head on my hands and nodded to Ivana; inclining for her to speak. My fingers started tapping on my face, a sign that A) I was impatient and B) I hadn’t had my daily music fix.

Ivana started giggling like crazy, that mischievous twinkle still in her eyes. “Okay so, his name is Jared, he’s seventeen and-“

“Whoa whoa whoa,” I interrupted, “run this by me again- who are we talking about?” I had a bad feeling I knew who they meant; please don’t let them notice him-

“Duh! That hot guy who you totally have the eyes for!” Popcorn winked at me, I wish I’d never asked.

I felt my cheeks burn at the thought of him, of those eyes. I looked down at my hands to hide my face, both Ivana and Popcorn would know instantly if I lied to their faces; instead of nodding, I made no sound so as hoping they’d elaborate without my input.

“Yep! And I’m guessing he has the hots for our Ali.” Ivana giggled as I blushed even harder, Zeta got up and started brushing her teeth in the bathroom- keeping the door open so she could hear us.

We all sat and talked about the guys at camp, whether any had caught our eyes; unfortunately the topic always let back to Jared, which made small butterflies tickle me stomach. I didn’t even know him, yet Ivana was convinced he was “the One” or something. Apparently he was really close to his brother, Shannon, who was a staff member this summer because he’s over 18. I was guessing he was the guy in the music room, he seemed nice enough.

At around eleven o’clock, Steve came in to tell us it was lights out. We were all pretty bushed from the day so didn’t complain, I changed into my comfy Pj’s; blue with green swirls on the pants and a plain blue tank top. I nodded in approval at my appearance in the bathroom mirror, my black eyeliner still lingering on my lids from this morning; I preferred it a little smudged so left it as it was. I walked out and climbed into my bed, it was a lot comfier than I thought and turned to face Ivana; she was kicking her slippers off and pulling the covers over her thin frame.

She smiled at me sleepily, “Y’know I still believe I’m psychic.” I rolled my eyes and we both chuckled; I said my good nights to Popcorn and Bambi and waited for slumber to hit me.
