Agent C

It's a Girl's Name

I stepped out of the jet and inhaled deeply.

Canada. Such a wonderful place.

A cold, harsh wind began to blow and I shivered.

Northern Canada. Even better.

I zipped my coat up and walked down the steps.

With a purpose driven stride I made my way to the awaiting pickup parked on the side of the runway.

I opened the door and slid in, starting the ignition.

With a deep rumble, the truck came to life and I drove off towards my hotel.

The town ten minutes from the “airport” was tiny but well populated.

And people weren’t suspicious at all.

Why would anyone be suspicious of a strange, new man that sneaked around and watched everyone?

I sure wouldn’t be suspicious. Of course not.

I rolled my eyes at my inner musings.

And what’s worse about this? I get a partner.

“Ray Daniels,” I said aloud with obvious distaste.

This is going to be an experience. I work alone; not with some dude who will more than
likely be pretentious and a huge prick.

I checked into my hotel with my new partner on my mind and made my way to my room.

I sat down on the burgundy recliner positioned in front of the old television and stared at the
digital clock on the nightstand.

‘Ray’ would be here at 3:50.

The clock read 3:49.

And a knock sounded at the door.

I stood to answer it but the door swung open slowly before I had the chance.

“And you are?” I asked without preamble.

“Hello, dear,” a feminine voice said silkily.

“Yes?” I asked, the irritation starting to set in.

“I believe you are Agent Dave? I am Rae Daniels.” And she stepped into the room.

And I gaped.

All I saw was leather. Tight, black leather.

I swallowed hard.

She cleared her throat and I looked up; my brown eyes meeting bright hazel.

My mind began to get foggy and I shook my head.

“Dave?” she asked, stepping forward.

“Jared,” I gasped out.

“What?” She raised a light eyebrow.

“My name is Jared; not Dave.”

“Then why do they call you Agent Dave?”

“Long story.” And I left it at that.

I looked at the girl, woman, in front of me. Her body was curvy and made the leather look as
if it had to be painted on.

I blinked in sudden realization. “You’re a girl,” I blurted.

She blinked, shocked, and replied coolly, “of course I am. Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Ray is a guy’s name,” I said, confused.

She rolled her eyes. “R-a-y is a man’s name. But I am Rae; R-a-e. Which is female.”

“Oh,” I drug out the word.

“Are we done analyzing my gender by the way my name is spelled? Because if so, I’d really like to get going.” She placed a small hand firmly on her hip and I felt my heart skip a beat as my mind ran with the possibilities of what that hand could do.

“Agent Dave!” My head jerked to the left and my right cheek began to sting.

“Did you just slap me?!” I asked, appalled.

She folded her arms and stared at me.

“You were staring at my breasts.” She gave me a hard look.

“Um, oh,” I said sheepishly.

Oops.

She shook her head. “Let’s go.”
