Treason

Prologue: Sleeping

She was gone in that ugly heartbeat.

"Come back to me," I whimpered, reaching out to the silhouette of the girl I'd always loved.

Then, the clicking began.
What is that? I wondered, sitting up. It sounded like Kennedy's old tap shoes against the glossy stage...

"Loving you was always hard, Charles," a girl's voice echoed in the dark.

"What do you mean?" I inquired, staring into the abyss.

"Loving you was always hard..."

"Kennedy?" I asked the footsteps heading my way. "Is that you?"

"Charles," she said, "we were so young."

Then, the clicking stopped.

She was there, standing right in front of me. The only color in the blackness.

I stood and moved toward her.

"It was never meant to be," she said, "and now I'm gone."

She wasn't gone. She was still here... Standing right there...

I needed to touch her, to make sure she was real.

"Sweet dreams, Charles."

"No. Don't go," I pleaded.

"Sweet dreams..."
