Don't Give up on Me

Daddy?

“Your total comes out to be £358.40 please.” The taxi driver mutters, handing me a receipt as I come up with the right amount of money. I hand him £375 and take the receipt and make my way out of the cab, flattening down my dress and letting out a loud sigh.

“Keep the change,” I tell the cab driver, before I close the door behind me. The cab takes off, leaving me alone as I stand in front of my old home, placing both of my hands on my stomach as if to protect it. I took a deep breath and started making my way toward the door, wiping the last of my tears as I knew that my parents were going to set off a new set. I had cleared my mind of what happened a few hours ago, and placed my hand on the door as I knocked lightly. I turned to the driveway, seeing neither of my parents cars there, and hoped to god that my sister was home.

“Can I help-” I heard a voice and turned to see the front door had been opened momentarily. My 14 year old sister looked dumbfound, completely shocked that I had shown up here. “Nicole!?” she screamed, pulling me into a hug quickly. Before I had left, me and my sister were inseparable. She was the only person I had talked to in this dumb town and she actually liked being seen with me. “Jeez, Cole, I haven’t seen you in like, 5 months. Mum and dad told me that you left for school…and then you never came back!” Valerie exclaimed before she pulled away and saw my large stomach. “Please tell me you got fat…” she whispered, and I shook my head.

“Mum and dad kicked me out, Val, I didn’t just leave. And no, I’m pregnant. You’re going to be an aunt.” I whispered, causing her to quickly usher me inside. I followed in toe as she walked toward the kitchen, where she had been eating lunch; grilled cheese. I used to make her grilled cheese all of the time because it was my favorite.

“Want one?” she asked, and I nodded, taking a seat. “I had asked them when you were getting home, and they just kept saying that you were at a friends house. The next thing I know, it’d been a few months and you never came back. And now here you are, knocked up…” she whispered, and I laughed softly.

“That’s why I was kicked out, kiddo. You know mum hates pregnancy before marriage.” I said, dropped the subject all together. Valerie handed me a slice of grilled cheese and we ate in silence. I didn’t know what to say, and she didn’t either. After a few minutes, she turned to me.

“I’ve missed you, Cole. So much. It’s not the same without you here.” She whispered, and I nodded slowly. I missed her too, but at the moment, the only thing I missed was my new homes; with Rachel. And then the thought of Danny came into my mind and I felt a tear leak from my eyes. “Where are you living now?” she asked, and I shrugged.

“Rachel welcomed me in her home, in London.” I said, and Valerie nodded. She looked down at my stomach and just stared, looking as if it were just placed there. And to her, it was. She hadn’t seen me at all as it has grown.

“Is it…his?” She asked in a whispered, and I nodded slowly. I had told her everything that he had done to me; when he raped me; the day after it had happened. She was the one that went to the hospital with me. But I didn’t dare tell her the pregnant part, because I knew that she would tell my parents in a heart beat.

“Damien’s? Yeah. I hadn’t told him, though. I don’t want her to have any contact with him, at all. He’s not suit for the job.” I said, again, thinking back to Danny, and how I had talked to Rachel about him being the father figure for my baby. I sighed, telling a few more tears slide down my cheek, wiping them away slowly.

“But who is?” Valerie asked, and I looked over at her, finally looking her in the eye after all this time. She saw the tears and quickly pulled me into a hug. I proceeded to tell her all about Danny and what had happened, causing her to cover her mouth in shock. “Oh Cole, I’m sorry.” She whispered, and I nodded slowly.

“I know, my life is just going down the drain lately, Val. I don’t know what to do with myself.” I told her, and she nodded slowly. I knew I couldn’t stay here forever, because my parents would freak out if they came home to see me again, after kicking me out. But I also knew that if I went back, Danny would try to apologize and I don’t even want to see his face any time soon. He messed up. I messed up. Everything’s messed up and I just don’t want to face it yet.

“Shit.” Valerie muttered as we heard a car pull up and the engine shot off. I looked at her wide eyed and I tried to stand quick enough so I could leave through the back door but it was too late. The front door had opened and a voice was heard as my father called for Valerie to help him carry in the groceries. “Coming!” She bellowed out, before turning to me. “Come on, he’s missed you.” She whispered, pulling me toward the front door. I peaked around the corner and saw my father standing there with his phone glued to his ear, before he pulled it away and ended the call, slipping it in his pocket.

“Who is- Nicole?” he said, shocked to see me standing there. I stood out further, fully aware that he was staring at my stomach now. I looked down, embarrassed and afraid that he’d turn his back on my and tell me to get the fuck out. I wiped another tear, afraid to look up at him.

“Hi, daddy.” I whispered, finally getting enough courage to look up. But what happened next shocked me. He had run over and pulled me into a hug, holding me so close that I didn’t even know it was physically possible. I had never hugged my father like this before, and I couldn’t help but hug him back, burying my face into his neck. “I messed up; I’m sorry.” I whispered. He just shook his head and hugged me, placing his face on my shoulder too. I felt moisture on my shoulder then, and I couldn’t help but smile. If only it could have lasted…
