Sequel: Halfway There

Almost Gone

Chapter Four

I don’t know how long I stayed there, in the dark cell, just sitting there crying silently. I could scream, if I wanted to. But I didn’t. I just sat there, staring up at the darkness as tears trickled down my face. Everything seemed so quiet, so peaceful. I almost enjoyed sitting in that dark cell.

“Alright, get up!!”, someone growls. I just sit there, staring off into space. “I said, get up.”, the man from before, Carl, growls, grabbing my forearm and yanking me up. I whimper, feeling pain surge through me. “What? Cat got your tongue?”, he mocks.

I nod, trying to make the motions with my hands to tell him I was mute. He clearly didn’t understand, as he just looked at me oddly. I sigh, shaking my head as I found it no use. Carl drags me out of my cell, throwing me straight into the cell-room. I pull off my apron, deciding to use it as a pillow if I could get any rest tonight.

“Hi, I’m Kate! What’s your name?”, one of the other girls asks, smiling at me. I could tell it was a forced smile, by the way her eyes truly looked scared. I shake my head, trying to make the motions with my hands to tell her my name. “Sign-language? Are you deaf?”

I shake my head, pointing to my mouth. “Oh, you can’t talk.”

I nod, smiling. “Can you tell me what your name is?”, Kate asks timidly. I think for a moment, studying my apron where the green ink was smudged. I spit on it, realizing with delight that it made great paint. I write my name on my apron sloppily, hoping that she could read it.

“Emma?”, one of the other girl’s say, raising an eyebrow. I nod, smiling. I start writing: I am Mute. I point to it, hoping they could still read it. “You’re mute? Oh. I’m Ella.”

I smile at her, nodding. I rub the green ink, smudging it into a bigger stain. I yawn, closing my eyes sleepily as I fall asleep on my apron-pillow with the green ink smudges.
