So Far Away

006.

Dad didn’t wake me up for school the next morning.
Instead, I woke up to the sound of the alarm on my phone.
It was set just early enough to throw on clean clothes and grab breakfast.

I found Dad sitting at the table; he had a cup of coffee and what looked to be my chemistry test from last week.
He was studying it quizzically, but didn’t hesitate to put down his signature.
I had my back to him when I reached for a box of cereal in the pantry, when he said,
“You do realize, that I’m disappointed in you.”

I didn’t have much to say in return.
But the test wasn’t the only thing I was disappointed with,
“I’m disappointed in you too, Dad.”

“About last night, Ian I’m- “

“Sorry? Well, I’m sorry too, Dad.”
I had no idea what I really had to be sorry for.
Although, I did feel sorry for Brian, he didn’t deserve the half of what I dished out.

“Ian-“

I looked at the clock on the wall in the kitchen.
“Dad, I have to leave. I won’t make the bus.”

Before he could protest, I made my way to the front door.
But, it wasn’t before I could find the doorknob that I remembered I had left my chemistry test on the table.
I couldn't leave the house, unless I had that test in my hands.

I was about turn and head back to the kitchen, when I heard the rustle of paper and the car unlock.
“I’ll drive you.”
