Not So Simple

Worried

We were sitting at the Cullen's lunch table, and Jasper was telling everyone about how I told Mike off. Emmett and Edward were laughing so hard, I was surprised that tears weren't streaming down their cheeks.

"Wow, Caoimhe, you're the first girl I've ever known to have gone off on Mike like that!" Bella said, looking impressed.

"Really, guys, it wasn't that big of a deal," I said, looking down. I wasn't used to being praised like that. I pulled out my phone and dialed my home number.

It rang for a few moments before my dad answered. "Hello."

"Hey, Da. How's Deaglan?" I asked. I knew he was in good hands with my Da, but I couldn't help worrying.

"He's fine, Keevie. He's taking his nap right now," Da said. I could hear a smile in his voice.

"Good. Did he eat alright? You gave him plenty of food? Did he eat his vegetables?"

"Darling, he's fine. He ate his vegetables and some chicken. He played for a little while, but then he got a little cranky, so I put him down for a nap."

"Alright. Did you tuck him in with his blankie? Does he have Pandie?" Pandie was Deaglan's favorite stuffed Panda. He never went anywhere without him.

"Of course he does," Da said, laughing. "Do you honestly think I would forget Pandie? Deaglan wouldn't have gone to sleep if he didn't have him."

"I know, I know. But I can't not worry!" I said guiltily.

"Darling, don't worry about us. Everything is fine. Nothing is gonna happen," Da spoke soothingly. "Now, go be a teenager. Make friends, cause mayhem!"

"Okay, Da. I love you. And give Deaglan a kiss for me."

"Love you too."

I snapped my phone shut and looked up. Everyone was looking at me. "What?"

"How do you do it?" Bella asked in wonder.

"How do I do what?"

"Go to school, and at the same time, keep track of all the things Deaglan needs," Bella clarified.

"Oh. It's not easy, but after the first two or three months, you kind of get the hang of it. I'm still learning. It's like, as soon as you think you've got him figured out, he grows a little more, and the rules change. It's difficult, but I wouldn't trade with anyone ever."

"You're a good mom," Rosalie commented. I blushed and looked down.

"I don't know about that. I've made a lot of mistakes," I said.

Jasper must have noticed how uncomfortable I was, as he then changed the subject.

"We had better get going, or we'll be late." We all looked around and noticed that the cafeteria was nearly empty.

As we all stood up and walked out, I shot Jasper a thankful look. I was beginning to like this guy more and more.
