Enchanting

Chapter 4

Will was outraged:"What kind of test is this?! Why should it matter how well I can throw a knife?!" The fairies just stood there with faint smiles on their faces and "black-beard" with a silly grin. He obviously didn't understand either.

Tristana pondered it too. Why would they test the prince in what she knew best? This is one unique test. Will turned to Tristana, for answers maybe, but she didn't have any. Will turned right back to the fairies and with a steady voice stated "I refuse to play this little game." The fairies just smiled wider and nodded at each other. Another fairy stepped forward, this one with pale green hair, to his chin and yellowish eyes. "Then you fail the test and you cannot enter." he declared with obvious glee in his voice.

Tristana stepped forward. "No! Your graces let me take this challenge I am a fair shot with knives. I can pass, I am sure of it." The fairies began to laugh and the prince shot her a glare to which she reacted to with one of her own. Such a request was obviously hurting his pride but she ignored it. It was no time to be playing to his hurt feelings. Tristana stuck her chin up and held her head higher. "What, you don't think I can do it?" They all stopped and looked at her with a seriousness that was not there before.

"We know you have the ability and we would gladly let you try but the question is will he?" the one with the orange looking eyes said calmly. I looked over at Will. Bad mistake, he was shaking his head already. "No." Tristana walked over to stand beside him. "Why not?!" she urged quietly. "Why won't you let me?" He replied in a steely tone. "This is my challenge, it should be me who takes it up." But she saw through that in an instant. "Oh..now I get it. Why they had this as your test...they know you are too proud and almighty to let a girl, much less a servant attempt and succeed at something you can not. That's it isn't it?" His eyes flashed to hers. "No."he replied flatly.

She sighed in frustration. "Will.."she started hesitantly, he looked over surprised, "let me do this. For the good of your country and mine, let me. We have nothing to lose and..." she looked down biting her lip, "no one has to know. I promise." She glanced back at him. He seemed to be pondering it then he nodded and smiled: "Seeing as you called me Will..." She smiled back and turned towards them. "I am ready for whatever you have for me."

The fairies' eyes flashed in triumph, then slowly the one who had not yet spoken yet, with lightly tinted pink strawberry blonde hair and light purple eyes pointed to a tree 30 feet away from her. On it was a gold fly, stuck there or real she didn't know but she didn't like this situation one bit. Her palms began to sweat and she began pacing something she only did whens he was nervous, looking at it from one angle and then the next. They must have known distance was her weak point. Somehow they must have known.

Will sensed her worry and placed his hands on her shoulders, rubbing them. This wasn't comforting though, it made her uncomfortable and she pushed him away. She didn't look at him as she took a deep breath, closed her eyes and flicked the knife from her hand just as she had practiced all those long nights. The knife turned and turned until it finally hit the gold speck on the tree trunk splitting it in half. Tristana smiled and laughed, relieved and Will grinned and turned towards the fairies.

"Well?" The fairies had no expression. "Very well then, come along."

The fairies turned and disappeared the way they came. Tristana and Will had no choice but to follow them.
