Butterflies

Scott seemed to be his cheerful cute self the next day in art and chorus class. And when we were actually able to talk without getting looks from our teachers, Scott quickly jumped at the opportunity when we entered our Home EC class.

“Hey Malean, look...I wanted to apologize about what Victor said to you yesterday.”

He shook his head as he continued.

“He didn't really mean what he said...he's just worried about who I'm making new friends with. I told him that your my friend, so he won't do that again.”

I nodded, pretending that I understood but really didn't...Victor's warning was obviously more than just concern for Scott's choice in friends.

“It's okay...I was just worried about you.”

I admitted completely. This bringing a smile to his lips.

“Yeah I know, but I'm okay, thanks.”

I searched his eyes, trying to ignore the tingles and warmth he sent me, not completely buying his answer. Trying to find a hint of false. When he said nothing, I asked him the question that he had yet to explain.

“...Then why did you...leave the way you did when my friend Nickolia came to our table yesterday?”

He answered slowly with a light and careful tone.

“... I'm sorry I left the way I did...he's just a...not so good guy.”

He said the last of his sentence as if he wanted to say something else, but choose the least mean words he could think of.

I slightly frowned, remembering that Victor had said something similar. Afraid now that Nick really was bad. Especially now that Scott had said it.

“What do you mean? What did he do??”

I asked quickly. Scott adverted his gaze from me as he tried to think of an explanation.

“...It's really hard to explain, Malean...he might seem like a cool guy; but once you get to truly know him...he turns out to be...not such a cool guy.”

I looked down, disappointed that I still didn't quite understand why Nick was someone I couldn't trust. I tried to defend him, which didn't seem to interest Scott, by the look of his expression.

“But...he really does seem nice..I mean, he like...saved me...”

My words faded as the memories floated back to me.

Scott's tone also didn't seem to be interested, but he asked to be polite.

“Really, how?”

“Yeah...I got...really hurt and got lost in the woods...he found me and took me back to his place till my parents came to pick me up.”

Scott stayed silent before answering.

“Wow...lucky for you, he found you.”

He sent me a light smile, before taking his attention back to our unfinished cupcake batch.

“Yeah, hah.”

I agreed. Dropping the subject since it was obviously no interest to him.

Silence came until the lunch bell rang. I was glad that I could finally step away from Scott and take my leave. The tension between us wasn't very comfortable, but Scott stopped me when I tried to say goodbye.

“I'll see you later.”

“Hey, wait.”

I paused.

“Aren't we going to lunch..together?”

He chuckled to end his sentence with a friendly tone.

“Hah, oh I'm sorry..I have to have to go meet up with my other friend.”

“Yeah, Avery, right?”

I was caught off guard.

“...Oh, haha, yeah. You know her?”

He smiled and nodded.

“Yeah, she's my friend too. Guess she didn't mention me.”

“Oh, heh, no she didn't.”

We walked out together towards the lunch area as he told me which classes he had with her, but my mind couldn't help but wonder if they were more than friends. I mean, they said they were friends, but that could only mean so much. Plus, Avery's much more attractive than I am, which gave me less of a chance with Scott...

When we got to our lunch table, I noticed that Avery was sitting across from Victor, while having a conversation with him. When they spotted us, they stood and began making their way toward us.

“Hey Maleaaaan, hey Scott!”

Scott greeted Victor and Avery, as I smiled at Avery, giving her a kind “hey”, while hardly making much eye contact with Victor. I still couldn't help but remember our last encounter, which ended on a confusing and bitter note, and that put me in an uncomfortable position.

Avery broke the awkward silence by answering my hidden question.

“Soooo, were all gonna head down to the schools field in the back to go eat and hang out there, so lets go!”

“Oh” I said, surprised that we weren't going to stay in the lunch area, quickly setting my lunch tray down to carry my food by hand “okay, cool” I smiled as I followed them out of the swarm of students.

Once we made it out to the field. I noticed in the distance, the small group of girls that sat together in a circle, who instantly bounced to their feet when they noticed us. And as we got closer to them, I was surprised to see that one of them, was the australian girl that I had bumped into yesterday, Meiar.

They greeted each other, grinning together, as though they knew something that I didn't. When Avery began to introduce Meiar, she stopped her to mention that we've already met.

“Oh, I met Malean yesterday, actually”

She smiled my way as she giggled. I nodded with agreement.

“Hah, yeah. Bumped into her too, after leaving photo club.”

I smiled at the memory and slightly frowned at the ironic-ness of it all.

“Oh, really?? Haha, cool! So then that means you've already meet everyone in our group, awesome.”

She smiled with satisfactory. I nodded as I smiled back, not quite following.

“Yup.”

Then everyone looked to Scott, as though he called on every one of us, just waiting for him to speak, as though the next thing that came out of mouth, was the next most important thing to say.

Scott ignored their gaze and turned to me, but his gaze fell, not wanting to meet mines just yet, while he tried to gather his thoughts.

“...Malean; the reason why we brought you out here was to talk to you in private...because what I am about to share with you, is something that the rest of the world doesn't and wouldn't understand...”

I frowned at him, not following him one bit, but I stayed silent, letting him continue.

“...But you have the right to know and we've all agreed together that it's time that you should know...before anything else happens...”

As he tried to form the next of what he needed to say, my gaze fell past his shoulder when I noticed a group of teens making their way down towards us. I slightly frowned when I realized that it was being lead by Nick, the group obviously being his friends that I had met just the other day.

When Scott noticed my attention wasn't on him, he turned around to follow my gaze, as did the others. And as soon as they saw them, Avery and the other girls began breathing out in a low and slow way, that sounded awfully like hissing sounds.

I slightly eyed them, wondering why they were making such odd sounds together, then my attention going right back to Scott when the next thing he said, worried me.

“Oh no...”

I frowned towards him as he continued, eying Nicks group, that was coming closer and closer, but were still on the other side of the field.

“What's wrong, Scott??”

I asked, my voice exposing my worry. Avery spoke up.

“Crap, what are they doing here?”

Scott answering her, quickly.

“They found us...they know.”

Avery asked with concern.

“Well, what the hell are we suppose to do now??”

Scott finally turned to meet my waiting gaze, grabbing a hold of my shoulder to take me someplace else, and as he was about to give me an explanation; a sudden jolt of spark ran through my entire body that came from his.

I breathed in a slow gasp, as the feeling flowed through me, the intensity of the feeling bloomed within my core, that sent my entire body, inside and out, a mixture of tingles, goosebumps, shivers, warmth, a quickened pulse, and a burst of tremendous light that swirled inside of me, like a group of butterflies had escaped their jar and fluttered wildly inside my stomach.

My eyes burned into his as he lips formed a soft smile, until Victor broke the spell that binned us.

“I'll take her out of here.”

Scott turned to Victor with concern.

“Are you sure, Victor??”

Victor nodded.

“Yeah. Come on Malean, we gotta go.”

I was still dumbfounded as Victor grabbed my elbow to lead me away, when Nick and his group finally reached us.

I frowned at Nick when his worry gaze found mine.

“Wait, Malean!”

He called after me, as Scott and the rest of the girls went into weird defensive positions, as Nick's group clenched their jaws in anger, exposing their teeth, their lips twitching and rising; as though they were growling at them.

Scott stepped in front of Nick, before he could get any closer to me.

“Take her out of here, Victor, now!”

Scott's voice raised with urgency, Nick towering over his body, glaring down at him.

Victor's grasp tightened, as he listened to Scott's order and continued to pull me away from the scene. The creases upon my forehead deepened, while my eyes stayed on Scott the entire way, wanting to stay with him, but the words wouldn't come.
