She Was Fading

Happiness.

Caroline tells me to go into the cabinet and I do. Inside are piles and piles of paper cranes. One thousand paper cranes. “I made them for you. My wish was for you to be happy.” She says with tears in her eyes.

“You didn’t need to wish for it, you just have to be in my life.” I tell her and we begin to cry together.

I stay for a long while and I even lay in her bed with her. I stay until way past midnight because the nurses know that “visiting hours” don’t apply to us anymore.
