Fat Girl
devoured snickers and mars bars
Monica Rivers was, in a word, fat.
She was not big boned nor was she pleasantly plump. She was not tubby or chubby or any cutesy variation. She was not slightly on the bigger side or hefty. She was not one of those skinny girls who claim overweight, but aren’t actually. The scale teetering was her proof. She was fat and she knew it.
She didn’t dance around the word, avoiding it like the plague, like many others do. She didn’t try to stash it in her underwear drawer along with the wrappers of devoured snickers and mars bars. It was hard to miss, the way it hung off her skeleton in a way everyone could see, so she resorted to the only thing she could've done: admitted it.
Her parents and friends never allowed the word past their lips though, and Monica felt as if they were the only ones that hadn’t accepted the fact.
She had very much accepted it. Chance Perkins had accepted it, emitting sounds similar to ones a large truck would make pulling in whenever she was around. Bianca Fowler had also accepted it, whispering snide remarks to her friends in a way that caused them to subtly peer at her in disgust. However, the people closest to her could not accept it.
Monica was like a lot of other girls in a lot of ways. She had chestnut locks of hair that fell just past her shoulders- many others sported similar haircuts. Her eyes were a bright blue that people always told her they envied.
Of course, that was only because they were trying to take their minds off the fact that she was fat and so tried to find any other redeeming qualities in her appearance.
As well, like many other girls, she dreamed of falling in love one day, for some boy to waltz in and sweep her off her feet- clearly not in a literal sense.
But while she held all these similarities with other girls, she was nothing like them at all, because she was fat.
