Floating Upon This Surface

Truth

Sergio watched as the blonde boy ran into Sophia’s arms and kissed her face.

“Mama, I’ve found you!” he cheered laughing.

“Lucas, cuidado, you’re going to knock my hot chocolate all over Sergio!”

Lucas, turned around from his mothers face, to the stranger on the other side of the table.

“YOU’RE SERGIO CANALES!” he exclaimed jumping, “Mama es Sergio Canales!”

“Lucas, yo se.”

“Hola Lucas,” Sergio asked curiously. A warm feeling erupting all over his bones at the sight of his bouncing form. “how old are you?”

“Five,” he said holding up his hand. “My birthday is February 15.”

“Wow, just a day before mine!”

“Mama! His birthday is a day after mine!”

“I know!” she exclaimed. She smiled at their faces, a splitting image of each other. Her heart soared. A happiness, she had felt a long time ago, erupted from her womb to the straight ends of her hair to the tips of her fingers. She smiled at their conversation, wanting nothing more, than to hear Lucas call Sergio ’papa’

“Sophia.”

She turned to the sound of Manuel’s voice behind her. She looked back at Sergio and saw he had stopped talking to Lucas.

“Buenas tardes,” Manuel said lifting Lucas up.

“Buenas tardes, “ Sergio replied, folding his hands. “You must be Lucas‘s dad”

“No,” Sophia replied sharply. “Lucas doesn’t have dad.”

“How is that Sophia?”

Sophia, looked into Sergio’s eyes, pleading for him to look into Lucas’s eyes and see himself. She looked at the steaming air weaving into the air in front of her and sighed.

“He just doesn’t. He’s only mine.”

“He’s beautiful Sophia,”

“I think it’s time to go Sophia,” Manuel said taking a step back, “it was nice meeting you.”

“Likewise,” Sergio replied keeping his eyes on Sophia.

“I have to go,” she said slowly, picking herself from the seat.

“Espera, Will I see you again?” he asked holding her hand.

“I don’t know,” she looked back at Lucas, who fell into her arms.

“I’d like to see you before I leave at least one more time.” Sergio whispered, pushing
Lucas’s hair away from his face.

“I’d like to see him again Mama, tal vez, Senor Canales, you can come over and play a
game with me?”

“You bet! What position will you be playing Lucas, so I know what tricks to perfect?”

“I am a forward!”

“Oh no! So you’ll know all my moves!”

“Yes!”

“Sophia, por dios, you never told me your son, was a forward! And knew all the secret
moves”

“I am sorry!”

“Will you come tomorrow?” Lucas asked smiling. “Please!”

“Lucas por favor!” Sophia hushed. “He just got here. He’s tired Lucas.”

“Only if you’re linda mama says yes.”

“MAMA!” Lucas turned overjoyed, “POR FAVOR, LET HIM COME! PLEASE!”

“Sergio, look what you’ve done,” she laughed, trying to stop Lucas from falling from her
arms.

“I am sorry, I forgot I do that to little boys.”

“Lucas, if I say yes will you stop bouncing?”

“YES!”

“Very well, now that we’ve agreed a second meeting, can I please take my family back
now?” Manuel asked striding over.

“Of course. I am sorry to have detained you and your family.”

“Adios Sergio!” Lucas waved, “I’ll see you tomorrow!” he ran down from Sophia’s arms
and ran after Manuel, who had begun to walk back.

“He’s quite a handful isn’t he?”

“Oh dear god, yes, he’s just like you!”

“Just like me?”

“Yes, even your mother says so.”

“She’s met him?”

“Yeah…she lives two blocks away from us, she watches over him while I work.”

“And Manuel?”

“We works too. At the auto repair shop.”

“Is he your husband?”

“Manuel and I, we’re together per say. He’s been so good to me, before and after Lucas
was born. He didn’t ask much about Lucas’s father, and took us in with open arms. I love
him, though it might not be the love he wants.”

“Who is Lucas’s father?”

“Sergio, I think you can figure that out.”

“How?”

“You left in June, he was born in February. He’s five years old. You’ve been gone six.”

“I’m his father?”

“The only one he’ll ever have.”

“Why didn’t you tell me? Does my mother know?”

“She was the only one who took me in, when my mother threw me out.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“You abandoned us Sergio. I didn’t want to tell you, because I didn’t want someone to
reject me and him like my own mother did. I wanted to forget you like you tried to forget me,
but I couldn’t. Lucas is so much like you, in everything he does. It was like having you there with me, all the time.”

Sergio felt hot tears collect around his eyes. His heart pounded in his chest. He had a son,
who he without knowing cast aside.

“I have a son,” he murmured softly, “I am a father.” He embraced Sophia tightly and
brought her face to his, “Sophia, you’ve given me a son.”

Sophia smiled at his expression and couldn’t help but kiss him. He brought her closer to
him and let his tear mix with hers under the green canopy.

“Sophia, I don’t know what to say.” he pulled away from her and rubbed away the tears.

“Just play with him, that’s all. Be good to him, and love him. that’s all I ask. I know what
we had is over and forgotten but with him, that relationship can still be mended and flourish.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too Sergio,”

“Will I see you tomorrow?”

“Of course.” With that, she bid him goodnight and made her way to the car, where Lucas
and Manuel awaited anxiously.

“I should’ve let him give you a ride back home,” Manuel murmured as she got in.

“Manuel, are you mad?”

“Why call me to pick you up, if you have other plans?”

“I didn’t expect him at all Manuel.”

“Of course you didn’t”

“Manuel, why are you so upset?”

“You know why? BECAUSE HE DOESN’T DESERVE YOU OR LUCAS. BECAUSE IF
YOU REMEMBER HE LEFT YOU, FOR SOMEONE ELSE. If you recall quierda, that man, wanted nothing to do with you and Lucas. While I decided to give you my house, to give you and Lucas my love. Damnit Sophia. I don’t want to lose you two.”

“You wont!”

“Yes. Yes I will. Because Sophia, he will sweet talk you, and he will kiss you and he’ll
make you love him again. And then make Lucas love him. And I will be left alone. THROWN AWAY LIKE TRASH. LIKE HE DID TO YOU.”

“Manuel, Please! Lower your voice Lucas, is here.”

“Sophia, I love you. I want to marry you and give Lucas my last name.”

“He doesn’t need your last name, he already has one.”

“He has yours.”

“And that’s good enough.”

“He needs a father.”

“He has one,”

“OH NOW HE HAS ONE.”

“Manuel, you know what. Go home, WITHOUT ME.”

“What do you mean?”

“Stop the car, right here.”

“Sophia!”

“STOP THE CAR RIGHT NOW MANUEL.” Sophia yelled. “Lucas, get your stuff, you’re
coming with me.”

“Where are we going?”

“Not with Manuel tonight.”

Sophia grabbed Lucas and slammed the door.

“WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO GO, YOU HAVE NO WHERE TO GO!”

“I HAVE PLENTY OF PLACES TO GO MANUEL.”

Sophia walked backed towards her hotel, hoping that by some miracle of god, Sergio had not left the café.
