You're a Scribbled out Name That My Love Keeps Writing Again and Again

The Pack

Sophia groaned into her pillow, lazily trying to bat away the hands on her shoulders. The shaking seized and she smiled victoriously into her pillow, closing her eyes and waiting for sleep to seep through her body once more.

But to her dismay, she wasn’t getting away with it that easily. She groaned again once the shaking returned.

“Go away.” She mumbled into her pillow.

She heard a heavy sigh. “Come on Sophia, I’ve been trying to wake you for the past half an hour. Get up already!”

“That’s an exaggeration. If you’re going to lie then I don’t want you in my room. So leave me alone.” She mumbled, willing sleep to take over.

“It’s already 11, Sophia. Now normally I wouldn’t mind but you’re presence has been requested.” Sophia could hear the amusement in his voice but she was still groggy from sleep and not in the mood for fun.

“What are you talking about?” She asked, turning over onto her back to face her dad, reluctantly abandoning the idea of more sleep.

“There’s someone waiting on the doorstep for you.” A small smile was playing on his lips causing Sophia to frown.

“I don’t know anyone for them to be waiting on the doorstep.” Sophia muttered, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. They still felt very heavy due to the lack of sleep. Her mind had been too alert when she went to bed, plagued with images of eyes that prevented slumber.

“Well I’m sure Jacob’s going to be chuffed once he hears you’ve forgotten about him already.”

Sophia’s head snapped up. “Jacob?”

Charlie nodded, unable to fight back a smile. Sophia could feel her heartbeat thudding against her chest, unreasonably quickening.

“What is he doing here?!”

Charlie laughed. “He wanted to see you of course. He asked me if he could borrow you for a few hours, show you around the neighbourhood.”

“And being the reasonable father you are you immediately declined the proposal?” Sophia asked hopefully, though she couldn’t help the sinking feeling that came when she thought of her dad sending Jacob away.

Charlie looked baffled. “Of course not! I know Jacob is a sensible young man, mature enough to spend time with my daughter.”

“But…he’s older than me.” She said desperately trying to think of an excuse. She was starting to question her sanity over the fact that she was angry. She had a chance to be alone with a boy who was able to make her feel safe and content. But she was nervous more than anything else, having no experience with any boy let alone one as overwhelmingly handsome and strange as Jacob was. The feelings Jacob gave terrified her. The reality was that she was scared of letting her guard down and falling for him. Up until now, her mind had been certain on an independent future, with no one to stir her emotions the way Jacob did.

Charlie raised an eyebrow. “By one year. Now get ready, you don’t want to keep him waiting.”

Sophia sighed heavily, standing up and stretching her arms, hearing her joints crack.

“I think he likes you, you know.” Sophia bit her lip, fighting back a blush. Her attempts to glare at Charlie were pathetic, only resulting in his laughter. “And by the looks of it, you like him back.”

Sophia’s eyes widened. “I do not! Now get out of my room, you’ve annoyed me enough today.” She pushed him out of her door, slamming it shut; scowling when she heard Charlie’s muffled laughter.

She ran a hand through her hair, picking at the ends as she walked over to her closet. She pulled on the tight skinny jeans, an item that was seen again and again in her closet. She chose a grey pair with holes in the knees and various other places. She pulled on a baggy purple top that had a dropping sleeve so that her shoulder was exposed. She stuffed her feet into her old converse, an item that her mother detested. Sophia had resorted to hiding them as her mother was desperate to throw them out.
With thoughts of her mother on Sophia's mind, she searched her room for her phone, finding it under her pillow.

She noticed she had three missed calls from Renee and sighed. She knew that when she finally did get round to speaking to her mother she was not going to be pleased.
As if on cue, the phone in her hand started to vibrate causing Sophia to jump. She stared at the phone in disbelief as she read the name that flashed on the screen. She bit her lip, her finger hovering over the accept button.

"Sophia! Are you going to leave Jacob standing there all day?!" Charlie called from outside her bedroom door.

Sophia looked at her door, then back to the flashing name on her phone, than back to her door again.

"I'm coming!"

She declined the call, wincing as she imagined Renee’s fury. She threw her cell onto the bed and rushed out of her room.
Charlie was standing with his arms folded, a smirk on his face. Sophia ignored him, slowing her pace to make it look as if she was in no rush to see him. She came to the bottom of the stairs, trying to fight the smile that was threatening to overtake her face when she saw Jacob on the doorsteps.

He was smiling sheepishly, his hands stuffed in his pockets as he rocked back and forth on his heels in an innocent manner. His hair was dishevelled, giving Sophia the impression he had just woken up and his eyes were dancing wickedly.
Sophia sat down gracefully on the bottom step, placing her elbows on her knees and resting her head in her hands. She cocked an eyebrow.

"May I help you?"
Jacob grinned.
"Actually you may. I was planning on going for a little expedition round town and I needed a companion."
"Ah, so I’m guessing after all your friends told you to push off, you got bored and ended up here as a last resort. That is assuming you actually have friends." Sophie said playfully.
"Ouch." Jacob said, clutching his heart dramatically and putting on a wounded expression. "Yes actually I do have friends and in fact you were my first choice." He winked causing Sophia to blush. "Though I’m severely regretting the choice now." Jacob said in the same playful tone.
"Well if that the case I’ll just go back to bed."

Jacob rolled his eyes.

"Bella told me you were one to laze around the house all day."
"Oh really? What else did she tell you?"
"Ah, ah, ah. That’s a secret."
"You and your secrets." Sophia muttered.

"Joking aside now, I came here to ask you if you wanted to check out my side of town. " He said with a smile.

“As much fun as that sounds Jacob, I don’t really-"

“Oh come one, don’t be such a kill joy. Charlie has already said you can go so don’t worry about any parental permission.” He shifted his position, leaning one hip against the door frame and gazing at Sophia. “Besides I’ve already told my friends they would be able to meet you today. I’m going to look like a fool if I turn up without you”

“Well maybe you should think about asking me first before running your mouth off.” Sophia said, though she was grinning teasingly.

“Please come, Sophia. I promise I will ask next time before opening my big mouth." He grinned and Sophia couldn’t help but crack another smile, his infectious smile getting her every time.

"Okay, I’ll come. But I can't stay for too long."
Jacob raised his eyebrows.
"I have...stuff I need to tend to." She said, her pathetic lying skills coming into view.
"Uh huh. Is the concept of hanging out with me really that bad?"

Sophia smiled weakly as she stood up, turning her head so her voice projected up the stairs.
"I'm taking Jacob up on that offer after all. Bye Dad!"

Charlie appeared at the top of the stairs, looking rather amused.

"You kids have fun now."
Sophia rolled her eyes. "Is there any specific time I have to be in? You know, do I have a curfew? Because I will totally understand if-"

"No,no,no. You can stay out as long you want. I know Jacob is a responsible young man and will look after you."
Sophia clicked her tongue in annoyance, turning and heading for the door.
"What sort of father is he?" she muttered to herself.
Jacob let out a low chuckle, making Sophia jump as she assumed her voice was too low for anyone to hear.
"You know, most girls your age would be jumping for joy at the amount of freedom you're managing to get away with."

"I guess I’m not like most girls." Sophia mumbled, avoiding eye contact as they stepped out the door. It was silent for a few seconds, only the sound of gravel crunching under their feet as they walked down the driveway. Sophia looked up at the sky and sighed at the suns futile attempts to break free from the bleak clouds. The smell of rain hang heavy in the air.

"Could you just...try to enjoy yourself? I'm sorry if this is not how you planned your day but at least try and make some fun out of it." Jacob said suddenly, his earnest eyes locking with Sophia as he smiled apologetically.

Guilt instantly washed over Sophia like a tidal wave. All Jacob seemed to want was for Sophia to have a bit of fun and find some comfortable ground in the unfamiliar setting of Forks. But Sophia had been rather bitter this morning, desperately trying to create space between her and this boy who she had an undeniable attraction to. She decided to uncoil the wire she had tightly wrapped around her feelings towards him. She decided to stop her hesitant behaviour towards him and then, maybe, they could become good friends.

That all I want from him right? Just an average, simple friendship? Right?

"You okay?" Jacob asked, suddenly crouching down, his face right in front of Sophia's.
She blinked, feeling her face heat up. "Y-yeah, sorry. I spaced out."

He smiled. “You seem to do that a lot.”

Sophia smiled, her nose crinkling. She looked back up at the sky.

“We’re not walking there are we? It looks like it’s about to rain again.”

Jacob chuckled. “It always looks like it’s about to rain Sophia. But don’t worry, we’re taking my ride.”

“Your ride?” Sophia questioned, raising her eyebrows.

“Yep.” He paused and turned to the road, gesturing grandly at the car that was parked there. “This is my pride and joy.” He patted the bumper of the car, grinning.

“Oh, er, cool. What kind is it?” Sophia asked, not really keen to be drawn into a conversation about cars. She was simply being polite.

“Volkswagen Rabbit. I built it myself, found all the parts and managed to assemble this baby.”

“Really? Wow.” Sophia said, genuinely impressed.

He turned away and grinned, finding a little burst of euphoria from the way Sophia seemed to be impressed with him. He opened the car door for her, staring at her in confusion when he saw her head was turned towards the cluster of trees outside her house. Her eyes were narrowed ever so slightly as she watched the trees intently, completely oblivious to Jacob.

“Are you getting in or are you going to stand there all day?” Jacob asked, making his tone playful so she wouldn’t get offended.

Sophia’s head snapped round to Jacob, her eyes still narrowed and looking at Jacob in uncertainty, her expression dark. Her eyes suddenly widened and she smiled ruefully. “Sorry. Spaced out again.”

Jacob frowned, his eyebrows pulling together in perplexity though he couldn’t help but let a small laugh slip from his lips at his strange imprint, her eccentricity making her all the more addicting to him.

She climbed gracefully into the car, smiling at Jacob. He got into the passenger seat and started the engine, setting off for La Push.

Jacob stopped the car on a spot where the grass was sparse and the ground was dry.

He turned to Sophia, who was biting her lip and tapping her nails against the dashboard.

“You’re nervous” Jacob stated rather than asked.

Sophia didn’t look at him as she shook her head and denied his accusation.

He gently grabbed her wrist, pulling it away from the dashboard and seizing the tapping. Sophia turned to look at him, his warm callused skin bringing a pleasant sensation to Sophia. He smiled, pulling his hand away slowly. He let his fingers slip up her hand, causing Sophia to suppress a shiver. She dropped her hand on her lap, biting her lip harder.

“Just a bit.” She said, dropping her head so she was framed behind a protective curtain of hair. “I’m not used to meeting so many people. I’m not very sociable if you haven’t already noticed.”

“Don’t worry about my friends . They may be immature, chaotic and tactless but they are defiantly hospitable. And I know they’ll love you.”

Sophia giggled, feeling reassurance in his words.

Jacob exited the car, walking round to open the door for Sophia. She stepped out onto the mud cautiously; knowing now would be the worst moment for her clumsiness to prevail.

She walked by Jacob’s side, taking in the tiny house that belonged to a woman Jacob said to be called Emily. Jacob smiled once more as they walked up the wooden steps to the glass door.

“You can go in first.” Sophia said quickly, when Jacob was about to open it for her.

He chuckled, stepping in followed by a cautious Sophia whose eyes were firmly placed on the floorboard. Jacob nudged her slightly and she looked up at her surroundings.

The pack looked up simultaneously, ignoring Jacob’s presence as their eyes went straight to the girl. The girl with a shock of dark brown hair framing her innocent face and big blue eyes, staring at them in bewilderment. She blinked, rearranging her shocked expression into a polite smile as the pack evaluated the girl who had saved Jacob from his mindless, painful obsession over Bella.

Sophia smiled politely, hoping it didn’t look like a weak attempt. At a table sat five boys. All had the same enormously muscular frame, abnormal height and short dark hair. Their dark eyes locked on Sophia making her feel slight unnerved. The boys could have easily passed as brothers, all very handsome though Sophia thought known of them could hold a candle to Jacob.

She found herself biting her lip again.

Suddenly, one of the boys grinned at Jacob.

“This is her then?” He said, turning back to look at Sophia.

“Yep.” Jacob said, pride ringing in his tone. “Guys I would like you meet Sophia.”

One boy caught Sophia’s eyes as he stared. He smirked wickedly at her before turning to Jacob. “Nice one man.” He said, winking.

Jacob eyes narrowed at the boy, his hands clenching into fists.

“Trust it to be Paul that riles him up already.” A new voice spoke from the table.

Paul held up his hands in defence. “Hey, it’s not my fault he’s so touchy.”

Jacob rolled his eyes and looked at Sophia. “That moron there is Paul. It helps if you just ignore him like the rest of us do.” The introduction caused Paul to mutter a few words under his breath and receive a whack on the back of his head from a woman who Sophia had not noticed before.

“None of that language in my house Paul.” She scolded him before looking up to Sophia.

Sophia tried to keep her expression composed as she saw the woman’s face. She was beautiful, with dark skin and exotic eyes, thick black hair, prominent cheekbones and full lips. But only half of her lips turned up at the corners into a warm smile. On one side of her face there was a scar that pulled the corner of her eye down as it travelled down her face, ravaging her skin and twisting the corner of her lip down. Sophia manged to return the smile smoothly, pity filling her as she looked at the woman’s contorted face.

“Ah Sophia, the girl’s arrival we have all anxiously awaited on. I’m Emily.”

Sophia raised her eyebrows slightly at the words but kept her smile none the less.

"It's nice to meet you Emily. I'm Sophia...though you already seem to know that."
"Oh don't we just." Emily said her eyes resting on Jacob with an expression on her face that Sophia could not fathom.

Jacob rolled his eyes again, taking Sophia's wrist and dragging her over to the table.

"This is Embry." Jacob pointed to the boy who had made the comment about riling Jacob up. Embry smiled at Sophia. He seemed to be the most mature out of the group, sitting quietly while the rest of the boys laughed and joked boisterously. "That’s Quil." Jacob said, gesturing to the boy who had spoken first.

"Hey." He said, nodding his head. Sophia found his attempt to come across as cool rather amusing and had to bite the inside of her mouth to suppress a giggle.

"And that’s Jared and Seth." Jacob pointed out the last two boys. Jared bought his hand to his head and saluted Sophia while Seth grinned at her and waved cheerily.

Sophia smiled back at all of them, even adding her own little wave to Seth.

"Where’s Sam at?" Jacob asked, his question mainly directed to Emily. Emily, who was fishing out plates from the drawer, paused to look at her watch.

"He's at Old Quil's, discussing the latest..." her voice trailed off and she looked at Sophia who was busy watching the boys with a weary expression on her face. She looked back to Jacob, her eyes meaningful "...events. He should be back soon."

A few seconds after those words, the door opened and only Emily and Sophia looked up.
A man, who once again held the same features and structure of the rest of the boys, strode over to Emily and engulfed her into a hug. He pulled back a bit, stroking her hair out of her face and kissing her forehead causing a giggle to escape from Emily's lips.
Sophia had an urge to roll her eyes at the lovesick couple. She couldn't escape from it, the love bug had seem to bitten everyone her. It was mocking her, parading around in front of her eyes.

The man turned to Sophia and she couldn’t help but feel intimidated under his gaze. He was the tallest of all the boys, towering over her. His stance was powerful, noble and he seemed to radiate authority.

His face suddenly lit up with understanding, a smile forming on his lips causing Sophia to exhale and feel much more at ease.

“You must be Sophia. I’m Sam.” He leaned forward, shaking Sophia’s hand, a much more formal welcoming given then the other boys. “I’m Emily’s fiancé.”

“Oh. I guess…congratulations. It’s nice to meet you.”

Sam smiled, glancing briefly at Jacob before settling his eyes back on Sophia. “Likewise.”

“Oh, it looks like the muffins are ready.” Emily suddenly exclaimed, bustling around the kitchen.

“Come sit down Sophia.” The boy Sophia remembered as Jared called.

“Yeah, we don’t bite.” Paul said, smirking.

Sophia glanced at Jacob jadedly. He sighed at Paul.

“Like I said, it’s best to ignore him”

Sophia smiled, pulling up a chair next to Embry and Seth, the safest boys to sit next to according to Sophia’s observation.

Jacob watched her, narrowing his eyes when he realised the only spare seat was next to Paul. After a few seconds a solution formed in his mind, provoking a grin to appear on his face. He leant over the table, receiving a few grunts of irritation and picked up the chair next to Paul with ease. He lifted it over the tablewith one hand and placed it on the floor. He bent down to grab Seth’s chair leg and gave it a gentle push which resulted in Seth sliding across the floor, thus creating a gap for Jacob to place his chair.

“Hey!” Seth cried, his voice much too chirpy and expression too innocent to come across as angry.

Jacob just rolled his eyes as he dragged his chair into the space created by Seth’s departure, grinning at Sophia. Seth muttered under his breath as he picked his chair up and sat next to Paul.

“That wasn’t very nice.” Sophia commented, giving Jacob a stern look.

He just chuckled, throwing his arm casually around the back of Sophia’s chair.

“You and I both know that this seating arrangement is much better.”

Sophia bit back a giddy grin. “You and I both know that was rude and unnecessary. And what if I thought sitting next to Seth was the best arrangement? Which by the way, I did.”

Jared laughed. “Ouch man.”

Sophia instantly regretted what she had said, scolding herself mentally for being pointlessly uncivilized in front of unfamiliar people.

“Sorry, I just can’t stand cockiness.” Sophia said, smiling apologetically at Jacob. Jacob blinked a couple of times, thinking he should be the one to feel guilty and not her. He smiled back at her, a smile that reassured Sophia.

“Dude, she’s way too good for you.” Quil said.

Emily who had been listening in on the conversation quietly along with Sam, giggled lightly as she placed a abundant tray of muffins, on the centre of the table.

“Dig in boys.” She said, retreating to her usual spot next to Sam.

Sophia could see why she chose to move back. The boys all dove in simultaneously, hands grabbing and shoving each other. Jacob leant over quickly, grabbing the largest one and swiftly throw it at Quil’s head, revenge for his earlier comment.

“What the hell man!” Quil exclaimed, rubbing his head.

Jared took the chance to whisk Quil’s muffin from his hand as he was preoccupied with rubbing his injured head and proceeded to shove it all into his mouth. An livid outburst from Quil soon followed.

Emily tutted him like a mother would a naughty child thought she seem otherwise engaged, giggling again when Sam nuzzled his face into her neck. The site caused Sophia to grimace and look away. She settled for watching the tray of muffins rapidly disappear as the boys shovelled them down.

“Sophia, you can help yourself as well, you know.”Seth said with a friendly smile on his face.

Jacob reached over and grabbed a muffin, presenting it to Sophia. “Here.” He said, smiling.

“No thank you. I had a bad experience with muffins before.” Sophia noticed a few strange looks so she proceeded to explain why. “When I was eight, me, Bella and Renee were in a cafe and Renee asked me to go up and get some condiments from the counter. When i was walking back to the table i tripped and knocked into some guy eating a muffin. He started...choking."

The whole table of boys, as well as Sam and Emily were staring at her with bewildered expressions. Sophia blushed, wishing she had kept her mouth firmly shut.

“He wasn’t choking to death or anything. Well, maybe he was but a waiter came and did the Heimlich manoeuvre so he didn’t die. I wasn’t responsible for a man’s death if that’s what you’re thinking.” Sophia rambled on, trying to clear her case and make herself look sane.

It was silent for a few moments before Seth’s mouth lifted up slightly and a burst of laughter escaped his lips. The laughter grew louder and infectious and soon, everyone was laughing.

“Seriously Jacob, don’t screw this one up. She’s a keeper.” Paul said, some words slightly incoherent from his peals of laughter.

“I can tell we’re going to get on just swell.” Quil stated, grinning at Sophia.

As the laughter died down, and mindless chit chat replaced it, Sophia felt a wash off comfort spread over her. Sitting at that table, packed between 6 rowdy boys Sophia felt strangely at home, more so than she had ever felt with Renee. It was as if moving to Forks had been the perfect option but Sophia had not known it.

It was almost like…fate.

Sophia turned to see Jacob staring at her, his warm eyes evaluating her expression. He grinned once their eyes met and Sophia smiled back, the idea of fate becoming more and more predominant in Sophia’s mind.
