-CALEB-

I had showered quickly and made my way to the parking lot after waving off Michael and Reese. I headed towards my car and was greeted by a very angry Cornelia. She stood by the passenger door with her arms folded across her chest. Her blue eyes squinting with anger as she blew a lock of golden curls from her face. She was like a sister to me, a very annoying one at that.

-What the hell Caleb!? You are like 30 minutes late!- She huffed as I unlocked the car for her and made my way to the other side.

-Sorry- I apologized insincerely as I slid into the car and turned it on. –We had a football game going on in gym.-

Cornelia cocked and eyebrow but said nothing else as we made our way home. As purebloods it took us decades to control our bodies and urges enough to be able to pass for an average human. I had mastered it centuries ago but she knew that I still preferred staying away from sports, especially full contact ones. Today had been different though, instead of handing Coach Robins my “Doctors note” stating that I had a heart condition, I had decided to play. It had been too hard to resist when I saw Winter convince the teacher to play with the boys. And Damn had she been amazing. And sexy as hell running across the field, her brow glistening with sweat and her… What in the name of Lilith am I thinking!?

I shook my head trying to concentrate on the road but found it impossible to stop thinking of Winter. I had been surprised, well that was an understatement, when I saw her take a stance in front of me. I could not believe she thought she could actually tackle me. But the tiny little thing had used my own force against me and landed me flat on my back. My skin may be impenetrable and my body as hard as marble but a flip like that still hurt like nobody’s business! The most annoying part of it all had been the need to play up the pain, would not do good to blow my cover over something dumb like being tackled by a girl. But damn was she something else!

-What is with that goofy grin?- Asked Cornelia, interrupting my thoughts of Winter with a start. I quickly rearranged my features to my usual neutral look before answering.

-Just thinking about the game in gym- I replied half truthfully. She rolled her eyes as if exasperated with me.

-Boys and their sports, I swear, it makes no sense. Let me guess…you won?- She asked sarcastically. I fought back a chuckle as I turned the car into the drive way of our new home.

-Nope, got our asses kicked- I answered, before mumbling under my breath. –And by a girl no less.-

I should have been smarter than too think she wouldn’t hear me, I mean, her hearing was just as amazing as my own, but apparently I wasn’t smarter than that.

-What? You, Caleb Dreken, got your ass kicked by a girl?- She choked out wide eyed.

I groaned and shifted uncomfortably in my seat before parking the car and scurrying away into the house. Not very dignified but then again it was better than having to explain what had happened.

I made my way into the house. It was large, the biggest house we could find that still fit our distance requirements, this meaning that it was on the outskirts of town and neatly tucked into the thick forest. It had been built around the turn of the 19th century but still held strong and graceful, perfectly fitting its wild surroundings. It towered three stories high but was not wide. It seemed someone had taken a British town house and transplanted it in the middle of nowhere. Cornelia and I each had our own floor while our “parents” shared the first one, mine was the third. A previous owner had separated the floors as if to create separate apartments so each one had been remodeled with its own full bathroom and several rooms. But the job had not been completed leaving the original grand stairway to connect all floors, the strange arrangement suited our needs perfectly. Just enough privacy to do our own thing but still appear to be a family.

I rushed up to the third floor trying to escape Cornelia and dumped my backpack by the top of the stairs. The third floor, having been the last to be remodeled, consisted of only two very large rooms and a bathroom. The room to the right had obviously been a roof top garden of sorts, it was plain to see for its walls and ceiling were made of glass. It seemed someone had taken it upon themselves to recreate the colors and patterns of the forest in autumn within the glass walls, making the whole room a shining mural during the day. The room beside it held a large bed, a small desk where my laptop rested and the larger wall was taken up by bookshelves that held my hundreds of books. Where it not for the bed one would think they had walked into a library. I had once heard someone say that a garden and a library was all that was needed in life, I was a firm believer. Sensing the arrival of my “parents” I made my way back down to the first floor.

Anthony and Sophia McClellan stood in the kitchen unloading grocery bags. We really did not need that much to eat but appearances where important. I sighed and started putting things away. Sophia had pulled her fiery red hair up in a messy bun that did not make her look any less beautiful and she hummed softly as she glided across the kitchen putting things in their proper place. Her blue eyes shown with happiness, she was always most at ease when caring for her family. Between bags she would peck Anthony softly on the cheek before moving on to the next thing. Anthony’s curls fell messily around his young looking face, his smile and eyes matching those of his beautiful wife. It was amazing really, even after 450 years of marriage they still looked and acted like love struck newlyweds. They were truly amazing beings.

As I put away the last of the food I saw as Anthony caught his wife by the wrist, pulling her into a waltz that was guided by the tempo of her humming. Her thin form had always looked so frail compared to his wide shoulders and tall frame, but the way he held her spoke of nothing but love and his desire to keep her happy and safe. They continued to dance across the kitchen when Cornelia came in. She leaned against the door smiling, she loved her parents more than anything. She was their child in every way but birth, not that it mattered to them, they were a beautiful family. I was not their child, though often I had wished I was, the McClellan family were my guardians. Sophia and Anthony finally stopped dancing and kissed quickly before turning to us.

-Your father is settled in, he will be working as a 1st grade teacher at Ash Mountain Elementary. Isn’t that wonderful?- Chirped Sofia happily as she hugged her husband. I smiled as I shook my head. Elementary teacher was a pretty odd job for people like us but Anthony had always been good with kids and had decided to go back to school so he could become a teacher. It was his first job since graduation, I was proud of him, and very much terrified for him as well. Tiny humans were so frail it was scary.

-Congratulations Dad!- replied Cornelia warmly as she hugged Anthony. She pulled away and turned to Sophia –And you Mom? Didn’t you say you would try to get a job?-

-Why yes!- She replied giddily as she hopped in place before finishing excitedly- I got a job at the public library!-

Sophia’s passion were books, she was the one that had taught me to love them too. Cornelia hugged her mother as they jumped up and down together like deranged school girls and I chuckled. The move had been drastic for all of us but it had given a chance to the McClellan family to try something new. With their responsibilities in court and as guardians they had not been able to pursue their own dreams. It seemed so ordinary too humans, but for them…it was something new and exciting.

Anthony chuckled as he watched his wife and daughter still hopping and giggling like fools. Then turned to me and smiled.

-So Caleb, how was your first day at school?- He asked. The girls immediately stopped and turned to hear my answer. Sophia smiled sweetly while Cornelia folded her arms over her chest waiting for my reply.

-It was good. Met some interesting people- I answered vaguely while thinking of Winter. I frowned. I had totally forgotten that I was supposed to be figuring out how she had known me, not mooning over her like some love struck teenager. Shaking my head I continued.

-Met some guys, Michael and Reese. Wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.-

Anthony nodded and Sophia hugged me happily. I had not taken the move very well so it was understandable that they were concerned. I turned to leave thinking I had successfully dodged the question when Cornelia snorted.

-He forgot to mention that he lost a football game and had his ass handed to him by a girl- She stated. I glared at her but she just stuck her tongue out at me before settling into a stool by the counter ready to hear my tale. Anthony’s eyes widened and Sophia looked confused.

-Caleb, honey. Would you like to explain what Cornelia is talking about.- Sophia asked sweetly. I groaned before settling into a stool by Cornelia while she eyed me smugly.

-No, I do not but I don’t think I actually have a choice- I grumbled, before taking a deep breath and continuing.- Today at gym we had a quick football game. We lost. The end.-

-Wait a minute!-Said Anthony and held up his palm as if that would stop me from running away.- Why didn’t you use the doctor’s note to get out of gym? You were the one who said you wanted to stay away from sports. And that explanation did not include the part where you were, and I quote “Handed your ass by a girl”-

I glared at Cornelia once more before giving in and explaining. I looked down at the counter before mumbling.

-There was this girl that wanted to play so I joined in too. She kicked ass. The score was tied when she decided to switch from quarterback to evil hound from hell. The crazy thing tackled me! I figured I would just push her back but next thing I know I am flying through the air before landing flat on my back. She was out to get me!-I finish exasperated as I flailed my hands over my head. I looked up to see Anthony’s face of shock and Sophia grasping the table to hold back her laughter. Cornelia was not so nice, she was laughing hysterically beside me. Great! I am never going to live this down.

-Let me get this straight. –Began Anthony seriously. – You played football because some girl wanted to. She was out to get you so she tackled you. She actually tackled the great and mighty Caleb Dreken, and what is more, she succeeded?...How big was this girl exactly? And what could you possibly have done to her to make her an enemy?-

-About five foot tall- I whispered without lifting my head. –And the reason is not important!-

My admission, which they all heard clearly much to my dismay, had them all laughing like hyenas now. Cornelia was banging her hand on the table while Anthony and Sophia were clutching their sides. I glared at them but that just made them laugh harder.

-Oh honey! You just made my year with that little story of yours.- Said Sophia between laughter. Anthony was nodding beside her.

-We definitely need to meet this girl! And really, what did you do to deserve her wrath?- Asked Anthony as he tried to stop his laughter. I just continued to glare thinking that nothing could get any worst right now, when the Gods decided to prove me otherwise.

-Oh my God! Caleb! Is that a hickey?- Cried Cornelia as she pointed to my neck. Suddenly they all stopped laughing and proceeded to stare at me.

My hand flew to my neck as I rushed over to Sophia’s purse and starting searching for the little mirror she always kept with her. I pulled it out and groaned when I saw the red smudge on the right side of my neck. Damn Winter and her games! God, she had turned me on when she bit me…maybe on Friday we could… I froze when I remembered I was not alone. I felt myself blush as I slowly put the mirror away.

-So…um…I have homework…I should…so…yeah…-I mumbled as I tried to make my way to the door. Only to be stopped by Anthony.

-Caleb, please explain.- He stated as they all continued to stare at me.

-Fine!- I cried.- Look, some girl freaked me out so I figured I would see what was up with her. Only she hates me. Then Michael, Reese and I were doing this prank. And then her brother wanted to talk to me. She was pissed cuz he thought we were dating. So she tried to seduce me to get back at me. Only her brother invited me over for dinner so now she has to cook. She was pissed, again. And I was carrying her, which didn’t improve her mood. She wanted to hurt me. Then she tackled me. And I don’t even know! It was a long day ok!-

By the end of my rant they had all resumed laughing their little black hearts out and I was seething while alternating between shades of red.

-And here you thought you would not fit in with human teenagers.- Started Anthony as he looked at me. Sophia was kind enough to stop laughing but only so that she could finish her husband’s thought. –But after a drama filled day like that…I see you fit right in. Make sure to bring her over next Friday. I mean, since you are meeting the family and all, she should do the same.-

I stomped off to my room leaving them to their hysterical and slightly deranged laughter. Here I was, the powerful Caleb Dreken, and some tiny human girl had managed to make me the laughing stock of my family, and all in a day’s work. If this was going to be my high school life…then I want nothing to do with it!
