The Boy With the Pink Bass

Chapter 1

It was just a normal day of band practice. Nothing special compared to every single other day, Alex, Jack, and Rian all gathering in Rian’s basement to jam for a few hours. It was 3 o’clock, the time when band practice usually started for the boys, and Alex and Jack were just arriving at Rian’s, guitars in hand and walking up to his front door. They promptly rang the doorbell, to be greeted by Rian’s cheerful mother.

“Hello boys!” She chimed, receiving bright smiles from Alex and Jack, “Rian’s downstairs, if you just want to go ahead on down there.” The two boys hopped into the house and went to the basement, skipping down the steps and trying not to hit their guitars against the wall, which happened all too often. They could hear Rian already banging away on his drum set with headphones covering his ears, and the boys had to try several times to get his attention before Rian finally noticed they were in the room with him.

“Hey guys!” Rian greeted his friends, setting down his drum sticks and standing up from his set of drums, walking over to greet Alex and Jack.

“Hey Ri,” The boys said simultaneously. A few words of small talk were exchanged, Alex of course managing to squeeze in as many dick jokes as possible in that short amount of time.

“You guys wanna get practicing or what?” Jack said cheerfully. He was always cheery; it brightened up everyone’s day.

“Sure,” Alex chimed, hoisting his guitar up and placing the strap over his shoulder.

“Actually, uh, I found this kid that plays bass, and I invited him over to jam with us,” Rian tried to gauge Alex and Jack’s reaction to his news, but it was a bit difficult to tell whether they were excited or pissed. “He seems pretty cool. His name is Zack Merrick, he should be here any minute. We should probably wait for him.” Alex and Jack looked at each other, and Rian was a bit nervous that they’d reject the idea of another person joining them. But, the boys just shrugged at each other.

“Cool!” Jack trilled, smiling and looking at Alex, who had yet to say something. The other two boys could tell that Alex was a little bit hesitant to let a kid that they had never met jam with them.

“What time’s he getting here?” Alex asked Rian, sounding a little bit irritated.
As if the new bassist’s arrival was almost scripted, at that exact moment Rian’s doorbell rang.

“That would be him!” The drummer skipped by Alex and Jack and bounded up the stairs, taking them two at a time, and went to answer the door, leaving Alex and Jack down in his basement just looking at each other.

“So,” Jack attempted to make conversation while Rian was fetching the new boy, “new guy. This ought to be interesting, huh?” Jack smiled, indicating that he was pretty excited about having someone new in the band.

“Well, I don’t like the idea very much, but yanno, there it is,” Alex did not seem at all enthused.

“C’mon, Alex. This’ll be fun!” Alex admired his friend’s positive attitude, but he couldn’t help but feel like the band would somehow be less fun with four people.

“Meh, I guess you’re ri-,” Alex cut his sentence short as he saw Rian walk down the stairs, followed by Zack, who had a pink bass guitar slung over his shoulder.

Instantly, Alex found himself at a complete loss for words, only able to stand there and gawk at the shy-looking boy behind Rian. He was absolutely beautiful. Long black hair covered his eyes and swooped all around his face, and he look so timid and shy it was just adorable. The boy was wearing a loose black sweatshirt and tight pants that exaggerated his toned legs, and large purple and white. His hands were in his pockets and shoulders were raised slightly, and his beautiful face was blushed. Alex fell for him immediately.

“Hi,” The boys spoke. He was incredibly soft-spoken, to the point where it was difficult to hear the simple greeting, “I-I’m Zack.” Alex couldn’t help but smile. The boy was just way too cute.

“I’m Jack!” the boy next to Alex said rather loudly, waving his hand obnoxiously at the bass player. This action made the shy boy smile a little.

“I’m Alex,” Alex looked bashfully at Zack, smiling as the two’s eyes met for a split second. Zack’s eyes were a wonderful shade of hazel, and shone with youthful innocence. As Alex’s eyes met his, the boy’s pale complexion turned a deep shade of red and his lips twisted into one of those unbearably cute half-smiles. It was in that moment of innocent eye contact that Alex knew he was completely and totally in love with the band’s newest member.
