I wake to the sound of rain pounding against the window and smile, rain’s not going to bring me down today.

I yawn and roll over to find... nothing. Then I frown. Doesn’t that always happen in movies? A night of... well, you know, and then the girl roles over to find the man of her dreams A.W.O.L? I think it does.

I get out of bed, pulling sweat pants over my boxers and walk out of the bedroom to find Gabe. The walk down the hallway is uneventful until I hear Gabe whispering curses and the slamming of a phone onto it’s cradle.

I stop in the hallway and listen to him pick up the phone again and dial numbers. I hear the creak of the floor under his feet and hope he’s not walking this way. I feel like a spy.

Then the footsteps stop and I hear Gabe say, “Hey,” and then I hear screaming on the other line. I recognize it, I heard it when Gabe didn’t want the flowers to be pink at the wedding.

Then I hear words that hurt me more than I ever thought, “Melanie? It’s Gabe.”
