The Heart Does Go On

Chapter 97 - "Happy 18th birthday!"

I didn’t feel excited for my party as I woke up in the late morning of my birthday. I mean I wasn’t sad or upset or nervous for the party, I just didn’t feel terribly excited. Even though I probably should.

I just shrugged to myself; maybe I’d feel better closer towards the party.

I didn’t bother getting dressed or showering, as I’d do that later when the party was closer. For now I put on my multi coloured fluffy boots and a KC dressing gown over my pyjamas, and headed downstairs to where the party was being prepared.

On my arrival the maids and butlers began to frantically prepare all the decorations, furniture, equipment and the snacks that would not go off.

“Everyone, please, calm down. I trust you all have enough time to prepare, and you’re more likely to make mistakes when you’re rushed and nervous. Everyone, enjoy yourselves as much as you can.” I said loudly for everyone to hear.

Everyone began to slow down their activities, and most people seemed to flash me a very warm smile as I did so.

“Miss Campbell?” A maid asked, approaching me nervously.

“Yes?” I asked, knowing there was no point correcting the formalities, they were under strict orders from Seto.

“Because it’s a party about the 2000s decade, we have a picture of 9/11. I am just wondering would you like it up or not?” The maid asked nervously, as if expecting me to snap at her.

I thought about it for a second. It might seem a little insensitive to have a picture of the world’s greatest tragedy, but it WAS a major part of the 2000s, perhaps the biggest event.

“It depends. If it’s a photo of the crash itself or the towers burning, or something to do with the pentagon, I want that photo burned never to be seen again. But if it’s something to do with a memorial to the poor souls who lost their lives, then sure.” I said, deciding on the perfect way to show that event.

“Sure, miss.” The maid said, scurrying away before actually telling me what was on the picture.

Shortly after the first maid scurried away, many more maids and butlers approached me obviously hungry for feedback as they feared the wrath of me, or even worse…. Seto.

I listened and spoke with some of the maids for a while, however I was beginning to grow a little impatient. This wasn’t how I wanted to spend the day of my 18th birthday, and I hadn’t been able to see Mokuba or Seto yet!

I was saved by Seto’s cook Billy, who rushed over and shoved the current maid speaking to me out of his way.

“Ella darling! Happy 18th birthday!” Billy gushed, giving me a kiss on the cheek.

“Thanks Billy.” I beamed.

“Mr. Kaiba has been requesting your presence in the kitchen for some time, he’s asked numerous maids and butlers to fetch you, but I can see they all became preoccupied before they reached you.” Billy chuckled, looking at the number of people working on the party.

“I should make an appearance hey? I don’t to feel the wrath that all the maids and butlers are going to feel.” I giggled, following Billy as we made our way to the kitchen.

“Ella.” Was all Seto said, once I stepped into the kitchen.

He dropped his newspaper immediately, stood up, and briskly walked over to me, engulfing me into a massive hug.

“Happy 18th, my darling.” He whispered into my ear, giving me a kiss on the forehead.

That was very out of character for Seto to use those words, and I was appreciative. I didn’t even make a snide comment about it.

“For your birthday I got you the most fresh, exquisite fruit I could order, and some very expensive yoghurt, imported of course.” Seto explained to me.

I playfully gave him a light whack on the chest.

“Naughty boy! The more we import, the more that gets subtracted from aggregate demand which decreases Japan’s GDP, and increases a possibility of a Current Account Deficit.” I explained, poking my tongue out.

He gave me a funny sort of smile, and stayed silent for a few moments. He then shook his head, breaking out of his trance.

“Ella, it’s your birthday. Take a day off from economics, and enjoy your day.” Seto said, grabbing me into an embrace again.

“Haha! Says the man who works 7 days a week and had to be convinced very thoroughly just to take Christmas off!” I laughed at him.

Seto just gave out a grunt to admit he was defeated, he didn’t like admitting he was wrong. As much as I didn’t like his grunt, I didn’t want to get into a fight with Seto today.

“The person I hired to do your hair will be arriving at 5.00pm. Is this enough time to be ready for 8.00pm?” Seto asked.

“Seto, you are the one overreacting about this. I’ll have enough time to be ready and read a magazine at that rate.” I giggled, kissing his cheek finding this amusing and cute.

“Are you sure you don’t want a make-up artist as well? I’m Seto Kaiba, I can get anything booked last minute.” Seto asked, sounding a little worried but proud when he mentioned his status.

“Well I’m glad you confirmed you’re Seto Kaiba, for a second I thought you were someone else,” I said sarcastically, and Seto gave me a glare “Yeah, I’m sure I don’t need a make-up artist, it’d ruin the effect of my costume anyway”

“Okay, if you’re sure. I’ll be in my office doing some work, considering I’m not going to be able to do any tonight.” Seto said, in a gruff tone.

“Yeah, you’re going to have to be all social and stuff!” I said playfully, and began to play with Seto’s collar as I looked up at him.

“Don’t remind me.” He smiled, kissing my forehead and walked off to his office.

Tonight is going to be fun, yay!
