Snakebite Heart

one.

Good morning everyone and welcome to KISSR 94.7’s Radio Chaos with Jackie Storm.

Music filtered out of the radio that was set up on the kitchen counter. Alex maneuvered around the room, a frilly pink apron adorning his lanky body as he scrambled some eggs in a bowl. Jack was at the kitchen table, constructing a bouncy ball out of rubber bands. However, his attention flickered over to the piece of black plastic that now had a woman’s voice ranting out of it. One thick eyebrow shot up as he turned his gaze back to Alex. “Why are we listening to this shit? All she does is bitch and moan, and then play some decent songs, and then bitch and moan some more.”

Alex’s dark eyes narrowed as he waved his goo-covered fork at his best friend. “Hey! Don’t bad mouth her! She’s hilarious. Just shut the fuck up and listen.”

Now both of Jack’s eyebrows were raised. “You talk like you two are dating. Is there something I’m missing?” he asked, giving Alex a suspicious glare as he sat down his half-made rubber ball.

The singer’s cheeks turned a nice shade of pink and he turned his back on Jack. He had never met the woman from the radio show that they were listening to. He had started crushing on her the day that she said Trace Cyrus looked like a horse and, like his sister, should never be allowed to sing. He fell in love with her when she had an entire day dedicated to All Time Low, and had said that he was gorgeous, talented, and a bit of a freak. Which was the total truth. She was opinionated and he really liked that. Sure, he had no idea what she looked like, but there was more to it than that. It was her personality, her voice, everything but what she looked like. Alex was sure that he could’ve gone online and looked her up, but it just didn’t seem right. He didn’t want to ruin any fantasies he had about her, either.

“Dude, just shut up and listen,” Alex muttered, pouring the beaten eggs into the skillet.

---
Alright guys, this is the last song of the day from me. It’s from a local band, one that is a personal favorite. You all remember my All Time Low Day? Yeah, sexiest day ever. I had to break out the toys when I got home. Anyways, here’s ‘Poppin’ Champagne’. Have an awesome evening, don’t eat any kittens, and I’ll see you tomorrow, bitches.

With that, her voice disappeared, and Alex reached over and turned the stereo off. He was in the middle of getting ready for a little party that his record company was hosting in celebration of them shooting their video for their newest single. He threw on a tight fitting pink t-shirt, some jeans, and a pair of Converse, going for a more simple look. To give it a ‘classy’ edge, he added a light dress jacket in black and then called it good. After grabbing his keys and wallet, he locked up his apartment and headed across town. He wasn’t entirely sure who all was going to be there, but he figured that local radio personalities would be there, along with people from his record label. Other bands would probably show, if he knew them like he thought he did. Any excuse for a party. Alex wondered if Jackie Storm would be there. She was from the area, and she loved his band. Surely she wouldn’t miss this. His brows furrowed over his eyes. How would he know it was her? Would seeing her shatter whatever it was he felt in his heart? Alex was quite shallow. He could admit that. What if she was…hideous?

He shook his head. No, there was no way she was ugly. She sounded too beautiful to not be. Alex pulled into a parking spot and got out. He clicked the lock key on his automatic lock thing and then made his way inside. The rest of the band were already there. Music was filtering out of the speakers that were sat up strategically around the room. The walls were a deep blue, and little disco balls on strings hung from the ceiling, casting little rainbows and shards of light everywhere. A long table was lined against the far wall, full of food and refreshments. Everyone was standing around, talking to one another. Only one person was on the dance floor, and as soon as Alex’s eyes caught sight of her, he couldn’t seem to turn away.

She was small, barely over five feet tall. She had dark auburn hair that was flying everywhere as her head swung side to side. Her skin was pale and clear of anything other than the tattoos that covered half of one arm. A sly smile crept over her face as her hips swayed. Her eyes were closed and she seemed to be enjoying herself, despite her lack of a partner. She wore a floral dress that appeared to be light, swishing around her legs as she moved. Alex had no idea who she was, but he knew in that moment, that he wanted to.

He moved one foot forward, about to go join her in her dance, when a hand on his shoulder stopped him. He turned to catch sight of the director of their video along with a few guys from the label. Alex plastered a smile on his face as he reached out to shake their hands. As they were all being introduced and whatnot, he glanced over his shoulder, only to see that she was already gone.

---
The next morning flared its bright head in Alex’s bedroom windows. He groaned and rolled over, pulling his pillow with him in the hopes to block out the sunlight. He hadn’t gotten in till nearly two am, and the girl that he had seen had never reappeared. He couldn’t seem to get her out of his head and it was driving him crazy. He didn’t even know why. He hadn’t talked to her. Hell, he didn’t even know her name! She hadn’t looked at him, so she didn’t know he existed either. It was frustrating all to hell. And when he asked anyone about her, they all looked like he was psycho or something.

“Aleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeex, wakey wakey!”

The singer let out another groan and vehemently shook his head. Jack jumped on him, making him grunt in pain. “Hey, woman. I’m talking to you. We just got a phone call. They want us to be on that stupid show you like so much. With that chick? Yeah. In like, two hours to talk about the new video and the party and all that shit. So get your pretty little ass out of bed.” With that, he slapped Alex on the buttcheek, and then pranced out of the bedroom.

He was shocked. They wanted him on Radio Chaos? He was going to meet Jackie Storm? Holy fucking hell.

---
Two hours – and about twenty outfits – later, Alex and Jack were pulling into the building where the KISSR station was. He couldn’t help but run his hands over his shirt a few times, smoothing out the wrinkles. Jack couldn’t help but make fun of him nonstop about it. Alex was sure that he had glared at his best friend more times that day than he had ever in their entire lives. The asshole just wouldn’t let up.

They were directed towards a room in the back. Couches were littered around a large TV. A large poker table was set up behind the couch and snacks were covering the surface. Only two people were in there, and that was one quite large black guy, and some short woman whose hair was hidden with a grey slouch beanie. They were laughing about something over coffee as Alex and Jack’s guide walked towards them, tapping the small woman on her shoulder.

“Jackie, they’re here.”

The woman turned and Alex choked on his own spit. It was her. The girl from the party. She was Jackie Storm. His heart was racing in his chest. He couldn’t seem to breathe. She was so beautiful in a plain white tank top and jeans. No makeup adorned her face except eye liner. Alex could plainly see a splatter of freckles across her nose. Just looking at her made him weak in the knees, and made him realize that his fantasies about her did her no justice whatsoever. Three years. Three years he had been listening to her, developing his crush and now he was just meeting her. He felt like a giddy school girl.

Her light green eyes slid past him, coming to stop on Jack. Her smile was wide as she stuck a hand out. “Jack!” she exclaimed, “It’s good to meet you. I’m Jacquelyn. Erm. Well, Jackie to everyone else,” she said with a laugh, finally turning her gaze towards him. His palms were sweaty, and he rubbed them on his pants before sticking his hand around hers, dwarfing it. “Alex,” she added with a nod, winking at him before turning back towards the guy that she had been sitting with.

“You ready to get this party started?”

They were led into the recording studio. Alex was set up in a chair across the table from her, next to Jack. He couldn’t keep his eyes off of her, but she never looked at him unless she had to. It was like she didn’t really know he existed. She was so focused on the radio show, which he could understand, but he just wanted her to…notice him. His fists were clenched tightly at his side. She’s so lost in stereo.
