Let Love In

One.

“Noah. Rae. Taylor. If you and Riley don’t get your pretty little asses down the stairs and into this car RIGHT. NOW. I’m going to leave you.”

“COMMMMIINNGGGGG!” Riley yelled down the stairs, covering for her best friend. “Noah. Stop staring at yourself in the mirror analyzing every minor detail. You’re adorable. If we don’t leave now, we’re gonna miss our ride, which means you won’t be there to lock eyes with Colin during your favorite song, and he won’t fall madly in love with you, and you two won’t get married and have an amazingly expensive and beautiful wedding, or have lots of gorgeous babies and live happily ever after. Now get in the car.”

Noah Taylor felt the blush creep into her cheeks as she laughed quietly in slight embarrassment. “Yeah, like that could ever happen…”

“Ugh, well you never know, so COME ONNN!” Riley grabbed her friend by the arm and dragged her down the hallway.

The car ride to the venue was a relatively short distance, elongated by rush hour traffic. Sarah flipped through the stations, landing on a Top 40 single and turned the music up, drowning out the conversation in the backseat.

“We’re going to be late. The show has already started. We’re going to miss it.” Noah chewed on her lip in nervous anxiety, staring at the traffic out the window. Riley stared at her, laughing quietly at her over-reaction to the situation.

“Dude, it’s gonna be fine.”

“I just worry about these things, okay? That’s what I do. I worry.”

If there was one thing Riley loved about Noah, it would be the innate but endearing shyness she exuded when around attractive individuals of the opposite sex. It was cute when she worried about miniscule details, a nice contrast to Riley’s more outgoing approach, which made them quite the pair. “Everything’s gonna be great. Besides, we’re just about there.”

Noah let out a sigh as Sarah turned into the sketchy parking lot of the venue behind the Denny’s. The lot was poorly illuminated by the neon signs of the surrounding stores and street lamps; the lighting from Chain Reaction on the far side of the parking lot revealed a number of people congregating outside by the doors. Sarah slid the car easily into a spot next to a trailer and hopped out, leaving Noah and Riley to trail behind.

As the two rounded the corner past the trailer, they stumbled right into Shaun, Colin, and Sarah congregating with a few others that neither girl had met before. Noah was thankful it was somewhat dark outside so the boys couldn’t see the blush that flushed her cheeks as if programmed to whenever Colin was around. She swallowed the butterflies as Shaun tapped Colin’s shoulder, indicating their presence after hugging the two girls.

“Oh hey! I’m so glad you could make it! Just in time, we’re on in twenty minutes.” Noah nodded and smiled lightly in response to Colin as he pulled her into a hug. Riley smirked at her friend’s quiet response, knowing full well how Noah felt about Colin.

Colin Baylen was her sister Sarah’s best friend since their freshman year of high school. They had dated briefly about a year ago, but both Sarah and Colin had mutually decided they were better off as friends. He had a way of making Noah’s heart flutter whenever he looked her in the eyes, and she couldn’t help but gush on the inside whenever he paid the slightest bit of attention to her. She was pretty good at keeping her outward reactions to a minimum after having gotten used to him being around the house all of the time two years ago, but she still fell victim to blushing on cue. His band, A Cursive Memory, was starting to take off, playing gigs around town and such, and Noah made sure to attend whenever she was allowed.

Noah awkwardly shifted her weight from one foot to the other as Colin wrapped his arm around Sarah’s shoulder, mentally reminding herself that she was just his best friend’s younger sister.

“Oh yeah, I should introduce everyone. Riley, Noah, this is my cousin Eric, Nick, and John. Guys, this is my best friend Sarah, her sister Noah, and Noah’s friend Riley.” Colin pointed to the three boys respectively, each muttering a greeting and smile in return. “The guys drove up from Arizona to come see the show, and they’re gonna stay for a few days.”

“Awesome! Arizona, huh? That’s a bit of a drive…” Riley wasted no time in continuing the conversation. Noah could tell by the tone of her voice that she was already interested in at least one of the new boys in front of her. The conversation was short-lived, however, when as someone approached the group a few minutes later needing Colin and Shaun inside for their set.

As the boys walked towards the door, Noah thought she caught Colin sending a second glance smile in her direction, but pushed it aside knowing she was imagining it as anything more than it was.
