Arranged

Miserable at best

Well this is nice; my mother abandons me with a complete stranger in our own home.

So what do you do for a living I say trying to hide my anger.

“ I’m a business man.”

I just stare at him. “Oh so I get why you’re here. What are you selling?” I ask him in my best

I’m truly interested voice’ too bad my facial expression is telling him otherwise.

He just laughs, “Well really that’s not why I’m here, but I could sell you something while

we’re waiting, if you’d like.” He says adding his gorgeous smile at the end.

“You must be good at what you do” I say referring back to his smile and how I almost did

want to buy something.

“You must be very popular with the women a few stalkers perhaps” I say giving him my best

smiles

He opens his mouth to say something, but the sound of my mother hanging up the phone

stops him.

At that moment my mother comes in saying the worst possible thing she could ever say to

ruin my life “Mildred meet your new husband, well not as of yet, but soon.”

“Excuse! do you hear yourself right now, is your brain working, do I need to call 911, cause I

m fully prepared to do that.”

“Mildred calm down, my brain is working quite perfectly.”

“What would posses you to do such a heinous thing, as to arrange a marriage for me?”

Just then James clears his throat, and we both turn our heads sharply and my mom,

remembering he’s here, puts on her fake smile, pissing me off yet again.

“I think I’ll be on my way now. I’m sorry your mother has decided to tell you now, so I’ll let you

both talk it out and I’ll come back around three tomorrow.

“How about you be on your way and not come back. EVER!”

“So tomorrow it is” he says, winking and walking out of the door.

“Mille I.” her mother began to speak.

“Mom don’t start.” she said sighing rubbing her temples attempting to fight off the

impending headache.

“I don’t even want to look at you right now.” I sighed gripping the banister making my way

up stairs.

“You don’t understand it was the only choice I had you’re old enough to know you father left

us in debt the man you saw he’s who your father owed the money to.” She said in a tired

voice.

“Lets be serious Mom how old are you and how old is that guy, theres no way dad could

owe him money, hes to young.” I said from my place on the stairs not looking back.

“Yes hes young, and you’ll understand somethings from him that I didn’t tell you.”

“Like what please tell, I asked harshly.

“Sweetheart he’ll explain.”

I went to my room not bothering to even respond to her, she had been busy I noted as I

looked at closet door haging open bare of all my clothes; like she knew I was going to agree

with her and marry a complete stranger. I threw myself on my bed and curled into a ball.

The sound of my phone going off woke me from my sleep. My clock said 1:30am great I was

never going to get back to sleep. I looked at my phone there was a text from a number I

didn’t recognize. I stared at the words not believing what I was reading, “ If you try to leave I

will find you.”

Wow that’s very threatning whoever you are,” I replied hitting the send but on my phone.

I stretched and my way down the stairs toward the kitchen when my phone went off again. I

was hungry due to not eating and being extremely pissed off about the whole arranged

marriage thing. I opened the pantry and pulled out a pack of shrimp ramen. I grabbed a pot

and put some water in it and sat it on the stove waiting for my water to boil before putting in

my noodles. The sound of my phone buzzing distracted me.

“Hello,” I spoke into the phone.

“I wasn’t kidding If you leave I will find you,” he said evenly into the phone.

“What do you want from me exactly?”

“ That’s for me to know and you to find out, wether you like it or not we’re leaving tomorrow

and we are getting married. It wasn’t like you had a decision in the matter.”

I stared at the phone for atleast five minutes after he hung up, the sound of boiling water

pulled me back into reality. I tossed the noodles into the pot, and waited exactly three

minutes before I took them out of the pot. I mixed in the seasoning and ate tasting nothing,

only thinking about the thought of being married to that guy. I walked over to the couch and

turned on the tv, watching re-runs of bad reality televivison made me forget about the horror

that was awaiting me in the afternoon.

Mildred wake up it’s twelve and you’re wearing yesterdays clothes. James will be here in

three hours,” my mother said screeching into my ear.

I hated her I really did, I don’t care what kind of dent my father owed I shouldn’t be the one

paying the price for his mistakes. How could my mother litterally just sell me for some

unspoken price I didn’t even know about. I made my way up the stairs to my bedroom where

my bathroom was. I pulled back the shower curtain and turned on the hot water letting it

heat up before slightly turning on the cold water. I peeled off my clothes and steped in letting

the hot water run down my body. I grabbed the shampoo and put some in my hand before

lathering it through my hair, rinsed and repeated the same process before finally putting the

conditioner in my hair. After washing my hair and body i got out. I grabbed my robe from the

door and put it on. Walking into my room I rifled through the packed suitcases pulling out a

pair of black shorts and a asking alexandria t-shirt. I zipped my suitcase back up put on

some lotion and my clothes. I carted my suitcases down the stairs and left them in front of

the door. My mother was in the kitchen reading a peoples magazine, she looked up from it

when she saw me come in.

“Is that really what you’re wearing?”

I ignored her and pulled some orange juice from the fridge and poured a glass, then

reached for the bagels that were on top of the fridge. I spread some cream cheese on both

halves before taking my orange juiced and bagel into the dinning room. I wanted to avoid my

mother at all cost being in the same room made want to murder her. I ate my bagels and

drank my orange juice. I went back to my room to brush my teeth, afterwards I stared at my

room, the room I grew up in the room that held so many memories. I didn’t bother with

goodbyes to my friends it would be to hard, I deleted all text from them. They would find out

eventually what a crappy situation I was in. I walked down the stairs and stared at the few

suitcases I had. I opened one and pulled out a hoodie, and my sunglasses. As soon as I

zipped it back up the door bell rang signaling my demise. My mother came into view as I

was opening the door.

“Mills why haven’t you been returning any of my text,” my friend Elle said stepping in the

house.

I threw myself in her arms and burst into tears I didn’t even know I had been holding in. I

was going to miss her.

“Millie whats wrong,” she asked her voice softening.

“What’s not wrong my life’s a wreck, I’m never going to see you again,” I blubbed through

tears.

“What do you mean you’re never going to see me again, Ms.Fraiser what’s she talking

about,” she asked quizzotically.

“She’s the one whose ruining my life,” I sniffled.

“Mille that’s not true.”

“It is and you know it, don’t sit there and try reason away why what you’re doing is right it’s

not.”

I saw the black hummer turn into the driveway. So long life, friends I barely knew you.

I wiped my eyes and my nose, I wasn’t about to give him the satisfaction of seeing me cry.

“Who is that,” Elle asked as he stepped out of the car.

My executioner.
