Sequel: The Blue Scales

The False Vampire

The Black Haired Blind Boy

I smiled in gratitude at the secretary. He, as a person seemed unorganized and flustered, racing around the small office, knocking several things over in the process. Looking around the tiny office, a spotted a rack of small black umbrellas. They were obviously used for when it was raining, but it would dim the effect that the sun had on my skin.

“I’m really sorry to bother you Sir, but can you please walk me out to the cover of the buildings?” He studied me closely. I could tell that he was perplexed with such a strange request. However, he eventually nodded. Slowly, he walked around the oak desk, his hand trailing around the edge of the smooth surface.

With long strides, he crossed the distance to the door. In the fashion that I could tell was only natural to him, he reached out his hand and jerked open the door. Sunlight spilled into the room. With stiff motions, I unhooked an umbrella from the wall and using it as my shield, ran across the garden.

Noting that the male did indeed follow me to the shady confining of the buildings, I closed the umbrella. Once more, my face flushing with red I handed him back the item.

“Thankyou” The words were muttered towards him as I started once more walking towards classes. I looked down at the schedule. It comprised of simple, standard classes. Predictable classes even. Things such as General Maths, Advanced English, Chemistry, Ancient History, Child Care and Digital Imaging.

I smiled slightly, happy to see some of the subjects that were on the list. Though home-schooled, I was eager to once more be participating in the field of childcare. Children were great, full of energy and life. It was something I had begun to live for, mostly just being able to babysit neighbours children.

Thinking back to Tammy, a “neighbours” child. She was only four years old, and gorgeous.

My foot caught on something. On what? I did not know, I do not think I ever will. My body collided with another, the impact making me stumble back slightly.

Looking up, a boy with black hair peers down at me, his eyes were blank, staring over the top of my head. I realised, with a mental tug, that the boy was blind. At least partially.

“I am so sorry!” The words spill out of my mouth, I having hardly any intentions to stop the cascade of words. From the corner of my eye, I see one of his hands twitch.

“Its fine” his voice was deep, husky. His nostrils flared, and without another word, he left. Now that I was paying attention, I could hear the noise of him walking, a stick that he held loosely in his hands sweeping the floor for obstacles that were in his path.

Pulling my eyes away from the boy…whose name I forgot to ask. I cursed myself for my lack of manners. I was too busy figuring out he was blind to offer my name, or, in return, ask for his.

Feeling slightly annoyed, I scanned the hall for a clock. Noting one about ten metres away, I picked up into a light jog, grimacing when I had to side step pillars of light. Approaching the clock, I glanced at its big face.

8:20 am

There was only five minutes to get to my first class for this morning. I glanced around, noticing that slowly, more students had arrived and were now wondering through the halls.
If I remembered correctly – something I rarely did – than the first class I had today was English in E02. Did that mean I would have to go through the horrid light to reach it?

Grumbling slightly, I began to ask around, the timetable clenched tightly in my grasp. It was discovered that yes, I would need to walk through it. My skin was already turning pink, places as if my wrists looked like they were going to blister.

Never before had I had to venture through the sun so many times in one day. I felt my eyes narrow. Perhaps it was not a good choice to come to such an open school.

After inquiring about directions, I walked through the halls. It reminded me slightly of the school off Harry Potter, with bricks and arches everywhere. However, that also meant another thing – lots of light.

As I came to the end of the shadows, the block ‘E’ just in front of me, I hesitated to venture forward. I glanced around, noticing, that there were tiny trees lining the path.

Sticking to underneath them, I practically sprinted to the doors. With minimal damage to my skin, I was happy.

I looked at the map on the wall, seeing that E02 was one of the classes that resided on the top floors. The more advanced the class, the higher it was. Because it was my second last year at this school, and I was in the highest possible class, I was in the room E02. I made no sense to me, but I could slightly grasp the idea – hard, as it was to explain.

Even worse, the classes were not in order. It was not like E01 and E02 were next door. No, that would be too easy. E01 and E31 were next too each other.

Once the class was located, I once more faced a familiar person. Samuel. His eyes were no longer flat as they had been when I met him at The Bean Factory.

As if sensing my disbelief at seeing him, he turned around. The look on his face quickly changed from disbelief to horror. And all in a split second, the emotions were gone. Quietly, he stood from his chair, scooped up his books and moved to the shady side of the classroom, his glorious window seat forgotten.

A tall, brown haired male was eager to snatch it, all the seats in the sun now taken. There were three seats left in the shady part of the room. All of them was within arms distance of Samuel. Pretending indifference, I “swept” (at least I like to think so) across the room to sit in the only chair in front of him.

However, despite how hard I tried, no matter what I did, I could still feel the tense, and powerful aura that surrounded him. Gone was the meek man I met at the Bean Factory, he was now someone who looked like he could kill without a glance. The question that popped in my head, was I afraid of this new, powerful man?
