Sequel: The Blue Scales

The False Vampire

And it Ran Red

Mothers smile turned into a grin. She knew she had purple hair, and she knew it was not meant for her, but for her partner instead.

However, she was used to it, seeming that we played tricks on each other all the time. She had been caught in the crossfire more than once.

Sticking into the dinner, I allowed the flavours to rush over my tongue. The only sounds that could be heard were those of the knife and forks scraping across the dinner plates. It was only Samuel who had the courage to open his mouth.

“Hey Adrienne, I have an idea”

“Does this involve any more hair dye?”

My dad raised an eyebrow at Samuel, who simply shrugged and stuffed another fork full of food into his mouth. After he swallowed he began speaking again.

“Actually, my idea was to teach you archery”

“Where is there an archers range around here?”

“Behind the gym” Jae chuckled for a second, sending a slight glare in Samuel’s direction.

“When?”

“Saturday? That way we have all day.”

“Sure”

Oh my god, where are they?

As I walked around the school, all I could hear was cheering. Giving up on the prospect of finding the Purswells, I began to follow the noise. The first thing I saw was a mass crowd, the second was Trinnean leaning against some lockers, Agata standing beside him.

As I approached, Trinnean said something to Agata and then turned to face me.

“Trinnean, Agata –” I smiled at them both “what’s happening here?”

My eyes landed on the tightly packed circle of bodies. It was obvious that some sort of fight was going on.

“Why don’t you listen?”

I pursed my lips, and then grunted. The action was very un-lady like, sure. However, at this moment I did not particularly care.

I closed my eyes and listening. Beyond the hooting of fellow students, I could hear the scuffling of feet. Then, the sound of flesh hitting flesh.

"How could you! You know what she is to me!"

Samuel's voice rung out loudly over the other students, quickly followed as Elisa's voice rang out, her gentle tone replaced by a harsh grating sound.

"Guys! Stop it!"

I felt my chest deflate a little, knowing that now, they were talking about me. But what about?

Shoving my way through the crowd, I came to the centre where there were no bodies crowding my path.

Jae's shirt had tears in it, ripping it from his collarbone to his navel. Three pink scratches crossed against his chest.

Samuel has blood dripping from his nose, his skin red; one could only guess it being the impact of flesh on flesh.

Liquid fire burned in both of the men’s eyes. As they stood huffing, both suddenly charged at each other. My breath caught in my throat, a little hiccup resonating out of my mouth.

Both instantly froze, arms outstretched and inches apart from each other. The crowd became silent. I had no doubt that the only reason thy did fall silent was to see what new events would unravel, bloodlust rang strong in their eyes.

With a sigh, both makes lowered their arms, looking defeated. I placed my hands on my hips, raising an eyebrow. Samuel and Jae faced each other.

“I’m sorry"

The words seemed forced and I smirked slightly. Behind me, I heard Agata laugh. Males. Finally letting out a smile, I watched as their postures relaxed.

As I turned to go, Samuels’s voice rang out.

"Don't forget about Saturday!'

Nodding my head once, I left the over crowded hallway, a skip in my step.

Remembering that the forecast for the day had been predicted to be hot, I scowled in the mirror.

In an attempt to stay cool, I wore a long gypsy styled skirt, with a puffy peasant shirt to match. Glancing down, I looked at my newly coloured brown toes. My hair was tied back into a long plait and a bandana tied around my head.

Reaching for the sunscreen, I began to massage the liquid into my pale skin. At the front door, the bell rang. I heard both my mum and Jae’s voices.
