In senior year it all unraveled. They had not quarreled since that day but the scar lay raised on their skin, a fine white border drawn across taut faces and fine lips. Jill had gone through many boyfriends (none lasting longer than a week towards the end of the year) and Jack was “going steady” with that girl from Mathletes who had the short hair. A new worry line was drawn across her skin every day with each kiss they shared, one for him as well because his best friend was mad at him and she didn’t know it. All knew they were unconventional but no one tip-toed around it, it just simply was.
