Verse 5

Jack knew she was completely inebriated the moment she arrived. Most couldn’t tell but he saw the danger in her eyes and again prayed to his God, making false promises to guarantee she’d turn out somewhat right.

Jill giggled dangerously as she gazed upon the sunlight streaming through the shiny crown atop Jack’s head, little rivulets of light patterned across his face. She reached up to stroke his jaw line and he let her despite being very uncomfortable, but it didn’t last long and soon her hand dropped, swinging loosely at her side with a cigarette between her fingers.

“I love you, Jack. Now close your eyes.”

“Don’t kiss me, Jill.”

“I won’t, Jack.”

She watched the blood-red flames lick the walls of his home before she tumbled head over heels for the second time. A thousand pails of water wouldn’t be enough to douse this fire.

They found her body days later, his indiscernible from the ashes.
