My parents decided to go on a spur of the moment weekend trip, because my mother’s best friend from high school had recently gotten diagnosed with a seemingly fatal case of breast cancer.
Now they’re gone and Derrick is beating a metal baseball bat against our back door threatening to break a window if Ellie doesn’t come out to talk to him. I don’t even know why she told him our parents were going to be gone in the first place. He probably would’ve never even come over tonight if she hadn’t mentioned something to him today at school, or on the phone, or something like that. She kind of caused this little scene on her own.
Ellie just wants to give him what he wants, but Mike won’t let her leave. He says Derrick’s insane. Ellie says she’s starting to think she is too now. The two of us just stare at her, not sure what we are supposed to say back to a statement like that.
