Children Of The Damned

Chapter 49

Stefan

We reached the poorly lit parking lot in just a few short minutes. As my boots hit the grimy asphalt, Damon was already making his way to the door on the side of the warehouse.

He stopped when my phone started to ring.

“Hello?”

“Look, I don’t know why I am calling you instead of the police, but Ana is in trouble, and I know police can’t help her. She distracted him and I got away. She did it so I could get away…”

Matt sounded hysterical, and he quickly stopped making sense.

“Matt, listen to me. We’re at the warehouse right now. I’ll explain everything to you later, but now I have to go.”

I hung up the phone.

Damon, having heard both ends of the brief conversation, kicked down the door, and within seconds, we were inside the warehouse.

I stopped dead when the overwhelming scent of blood washed over me.

Damon

As soon as the smell of her blood hit me, all sense of rational thought left me and the animal took over.

I ran faster than I had ever run before, and I reached a clear area of concrete floor, where someone was kneeling, cradling something small and still in his arms.

All I could see was red.

Her head lolled to one side, exposing a pale, thin white neck. A neck that was slashed open and covered in blood.

“Damon,” she whispered, giving away my presence.

The vampire kneeling over her lowered her to the ground and turned to face me, poised in a crouch.

His eyes were that of a monster’s. His mouth was covered in her blood.

I didn’t even remember moving, but in an instant he was up against the wall, my hand at his throat.

He moved more quickly than any new vampire I had ever seen before. Soon, I was the one on the floor, his fangs ready to tear at my throat.

He pulled a stake from somewhere, but I pulled out my gun in a blindingly fast movement, firing the wooden bullets into his gut and throwing him off of me.

Stefan joined in the fray, pulling Richard off of me by his shirt collar, and I retrieved a stake from the ground.

A small noise distracted me for only a few seconds, but it was enough.

Ana coughed from where she lay on the floor, but her cough sounded wet. I looked back at her, turning away from the rogue vampire long enough to see that the corners of her mouth were stained red.

Ana was dying.
