I crawled out of bed and went to my window to see Damon poised in the tree outside my window, throwing pebbles at the glass.

I put a finger to my lips, motioning for him to be quite because my parents were asleep, before I opened my window, letting him in.

“Hello, beautiful,” he said as he came through the window, landing soundlessly on my bedroom floor. “And what happened with your parents?”

“I made up a story…a bad one too.”

“Yes?” he asked, eyebrows raised.

“I just…well, I didn’t really lie to them at all. I told them I stayed the night with you, and they grounded me for breaking their trust in me. You know, the regular old juvenile delinquent kind of thing.” I laughed shakily. “Well, I guess more than anything they’re mad at me for not being their little girl anymore.”

“That was brave of you. I never dared tell my father about my…extracurricular activities. But then again, word got out pretty quickly back then. He knew everything. I was an embarrassment to the family name, if you know what I mean. Well, it depended on who you talked to. Some of the young ladies thought it was all very…fascinating.”

“I imagine they would be interested in your…conquests. But I would hardly call you an extracurricular activity. You’re a little more important than that; part of the curriculum, in fact.”

Damon pulled me against him, his body warm and inviting and smelling of its usual musk. I kissed him, unable to control the urge to bring myself closer to him after a day of being grounded…after a night of nearly losing my life.

“My parents want to meet you. Probably to inform you that you are forbidden to see me and that you have corrupted their innocent daughter.”

“Well, I will have to inform them that I’m not going to give you up all that easily. After all, I did kill for you, and I would be willing to do it again in an instant.”

I kissed him again, and his fingers brushed my chin. “Hopefully it will never come to that,” I said, and walked back over to my bed, crawling back under the covers and holding them open, beckoning for Damon to join me in the empty space I had made for him.

He shed his black, leather jacket and kicked off his biker boots, and then slid into the bed with me. I threw the covers over the both of us and scooted closer to him until our bodies were pressed firmly together and my head was snuggled up on his chest, listening to the steady sound of his breathing.

“My parents have never grounded me before,” I said, taking his hand in mine. “I’m not sure whether to be pissed like any other normal teenaged girl, or to be happy that they were finally paying enough attention to realize that I wasn’t in my bed last night.”

“I think I would be furious,” he said, moving his thumb in circles across the back of my hand. “After all,” he continued, “they have no right to play authoritarian parental guardians after all this time.”

“Yeah, and they are so clueless when it comes to grounding me that they are taking a business trip to Georgia, thinking that I am going to just stay in the house while they are gone.”

“Like I said, you can come over any time you want. I don’t want you to get lonely while your grounded in the house all by yourself.” He laughed quietly.

“I missed you today,” I told him, blushing as I said it, and wondering if there would ever be time when his presence did make my heart hammer wildly in my chest, my face feel like it was on fire, or my stomach flutter.

“And I missed you. Ever since you were taken, I feel like I’m constantly on edge, and when I can’t see you, I’m helpless. Stefan says it happened with Elena too, that it puts things into perspective. I’ve never loved anyone the way I love you. And no matter what happens in the future, I’m not going to let anything come between us. I’m going to love and protect you…always.”

And I knew that he meant it, and I wasn’t afraid.
