Innocence is an Illusion

Chapter 2

Adam Silvers was the definition of a good spy.

Never blew his cover, never recognized by past enemies, never made a mistake. The epitome of perfection in the IMF. With his brains, he didn’t have to be a field agent; he could have been a forensic analyst, a linguist, or even a weapons analyst. He was the envy of all the agents, the favorite of all the officers and heads. Many wanted to hate him because of his perfection, but none of them could bring themselves to – he was just too kindhearted. Always helpful, always smiling, always . . . perfect. Everyone thought that he would become the new head of Special Operations one day, and joked that they already had a door plaque with his name on it. None of them could have predicted his death. Nobody saw it coming. Except for one person. His daughter.

A few hours before Adam Silvers was killed, he was sitting in his small apartment watching old movies, with his wife curled up to him on his left side while his eleven year old daughter was on his right side with her head in his lap, sleeping peacefully. Adam glanced down at his watch nonchalantly, but then abruptly stood up, causing his daughter to sit up in a panic.

“Ah! Où est le feu?” Lexi cried, startled, as she sat up defensively, looking for some kind of threat. Her mother reached for her smoothed the child’s dark hair, assuring her that nothing was wrong. Her father chuckled and kissed the young girl on the forehead.

“Il n'y a no le feu, ma chérie, seul un papa distrait. Rendormir.” He turned to his wife and kissed her lovingly. “I have to go; I’m meeting Ben for an important discussion. I’ll be back later.” Grabbing his keys, he started towards the front door, not noticing Lexi’s eyes grow wide at the mention of Ben.

“No! Non si può andare! Non ti puoi fidare Ben!” She exclaimed, switching from French to Italian. Lexi ran to her father’s side, throwing her arms around his waist. Her mother stood up, staring at her daughter and husband curiously, not knowing what they said. Adam picked up his daughter, balancing her on one side as if she was a toddler. He stared into her bright green eyes, sensing the fear in them, though not knowing why.

“Was ist los, liebling? Ben ist einer der guten Jungs, wir können ihm vertrauen.” Adam questioned his worried child, once again switching the language, this time to German. His daughter just stared at him, shaking her head.

“No, no podemos! Algo extraño acerca de él, papá, puedo sentirlo!” She exclaimed worriedly in Spanish, hugging herself to her father.

Adam sighed, rubbing the young girl’s back. His wife came over, engulfing the two of them so that they were in a family hug. “I wish you two would just speak in English for once.” She murmured against her daughter’s hair. She felt her husband’s stomach rumble with his laughter, and heard her child’s innocent giggles.

“Lexi thinks Ben can’t be trusted. She believes he’s not on our side.” Adam explained as his wife looked up questioningly at her daughter.

“Sweetheart, you’ve known Uncle Benny since you were little. He took care of you whenever we couldn’t. He’s daddy’s best friend. Why don’t you like him?”

Her daughter stayed quiet for a minute, before looking up at her mom with fearful eyes.

“He’s changed, mommy. He’s evil.”
