Desolate

Chapter Two

Charlie furiously fixed her uncooperative hair, because when zombies are on the run; hair is the least of your problems. Her mind couldn't help but wander to how the world used to be, where hair was the top priority; now it's not to become flesh-eating, mindless, rotting killers.

"Oliver said that they've checked the area," She started, her eyes never darting away from the road, "It's completely sterile, or at least it is for now," She continued, watching the street even though she didn't need to; there were no humans, at least from what she's seen. Zombies, of course.

"What how?" Jordan questioned, her blanket still wrapped tightly around her shoulders; by now, her damp hair had become completely dry and she was still cold to Charlie. She doesn't blame her though, she can be a pain in the ass; at least she's proud of it.

"These zombies, they go where food is, where humans are," Charlie started, feeling her knuckles clench around the steering wheel. "If there isn't humans in the mountains, then they won't be there. That's why those damn people in the desert can make it, if they're not found," she continued, shocked as a body hit the van's front; luckily it only splattered and disappeared, meaning it was just an unsuspecting zombie.

"What if that had been a human!?" Jordan screeched, eyes wide and full of shock; rolling her eyes, Charlie continued on the road. "Look, how can you not hope that there's people out there? Are you that selfish not to care?" she continued, Charlie's throat clenching as she immediately let go of the steering. Alex was nimble, immediately grabbing hold of the steering wheel and taking Charlie's seat as she jumped out of it.

"Look, I don't want problems here," Charlie growled, watching as Jordan stood up to meet her. "As much as I don't want to help people out because of my attitude, I have to because no one wants to be the last one out here. We have to work together, whether we like to or not!" Charlie was steaming, and Jordan wasn't chilled either. "We have to put our differences aside and just take this in, this is a dead man's world. Chances are there are only hundreds left! And that's just in the country," She finished, collapsing on the floor of the van and exhaustingly leaning against the wall.

"We have to forget about people, and worry about us," Dylan remarked, handing Charlie a blanket as Jordan took the passenger seat. "Let's just calm down," she continued, patting Charlie tiredly on the head. The day had been over, and the storm had passed, but that didn't stop the driving because there were no times for stopping; not even for bathroom.

"Are those the mountains?" Jordan questioned, pointing towards the ones that were currently nearby, and Bianca shook her head; an all together sigh collected. Without knowing it, each and every mind was wandering towards family and loved ones; even though just the thought was heartache to think.

"I had a boyfriend," Dylan started out suddenly, "I wanted to see him, but I passed by our apartment...the windows...blood splattered," That was all she could splutter as tiny tears inked down her cheeks; no one could blame anyone as the tears slowly came, but no one wanted to admit it. Charlie hastily wiped her cheeks, staring at the floor as she picked some dirt off her boot.

"I had a family, but they were collected in the initial wave," Charlie started, and Jordan's eyes barely watched her from the corner of her eye. No one had to look to see that everyone's been through a lot, and no one questioned it; the anger was natural, what would you do in this situation? "I also had a boyfriend, he was awesome; only got to dream about making a family with him," she chuckled as Dylan nodded her head slowly; her hair falling into her face.

"We should take a stop," she announced, letting Alex pull slowly over; immediately turning off the headlights. The road was empty, and by now they had reached the area of nothing but trees and dirt; not even a city could be seen from this distance.

"Wha-h-how why?" Jordan stammered, watching as Bianca held a finger to her lips; making Jordan immediately quiet. They always took the time to make a random stop, and just sit and wait; not to be attacked, but to make an evaluation of where ever they are.

"We're just listening, seeing how many are following," Charlie whispered, nothing but silence ensued. With quick steps, Dylan stood up making her way to the door; the night was completely empty minus for her footsteps. As sudden as it was, a loud bang was quickly thrown against the side of the van; a gurgling sound erupting from outside, like the sound of someone choking on their own blood. "I say, this place is definitely infected," she laughed.

"Oh shit!" Jordan was shocked, even though she wasn't technically scared. Charlie immediately stood up, pulling a large shot gun from under the passenger's seat; it was large and efficient. It was Charlie's baby, and no one was allowed to touch it minus her; everyone has something that they keep precious when the time allows it.

"This is why I like this!" She beamed, promptly cocking the gun as she partially leant towards the window, the sound of the gun didn't falter anyone as Alex grinned; turning the engine and letting the rumble. "Here they come," Charlie whispered, the noise of grumbling, gurgling, and even snarling erupted from around the darkness. It was a horde of them, their decomposing skin was enough to smell from the cracked open windows; limbs were slowly falling off, with their skin open and the insides crawling with bacteria and parasites.

"Let's go," Jordan couldn't help but smile, letting the car lurch as Alex took off down the road. This was the world that we lived in now; no drugs, sex and rock and roll. It was limited down to the desolate hiding spots, and the endless supply of target practice; luckily, as time moves on they won't need target practice.

"You're going to need this," Dylan passed another gun to Jordan as the car continued, Charlie's shot gun ringing as the headlights illuminated the bodies of the dead. "Aim for the heads," she winked, watching as Jordan started to slowly lean the gun outside the window. Jordan hasn't fired guns before, and on first glance she didn't think she could do it. Cocking it, she watched as bodies flooded past her, and she shot; the kick back making her bump into Alex who in turn, lurched the car to the left.

"Sorry," Jordan apologized, aiming outside yet another time; this time keeping an eye ahead of her. Firing the gun, she was shocked, watching the back of a zombie's head completely shatter; blood splashing against the already stained vehicle. It was the sloshing of the decomposing flesh, and the splashing of the already died off brains that made it unbearable at first; as time moves on, that becomes the best part.

"Nice shot, I might have been underestimating you," Charlie smirked, feeling a slight like to the girl in the passenger seat; then again, anyone else with a shot like hers, she would appreciate. Charlie grew up with brothers, and they were keen on getting her ready for anything; although, you could doubt this wasn't what they had in mind.

"They'll give up soon," Bianca murmured, picking at her sickly press on nails; ignoring Charlie's shrieks of joy. Meanwhile Charlie's gun was pointed out in front of her as she leaned over Alex, her aim on the targets in front of us. A cock, a flash, and then the head of a zombie hitting the windshield; a wind range of laughter from Charlie, as she hit the wind shield wipers. The blood cleared only slightly as they continued down the road; slowly the amount of zombies dwindled down to nothing by the time that the sun had rose high enough for the light to blind the driver.

"I don't know how much longer," Charlie spoke into a phone, thankful that despite the apocalypse of the walking dead, the phone lines still linger. There were a group of guys waiting for them in the mountains, they would need them; boy's were a force that was needed to survive in a world where it's constant false security. "Just stand by until we arrive, I know that we'll make it there," she finished the call, shoving the phone hastily into her pocket and leaning against the back of the van.

"Everyone tired?" Bianca mumbled, rising from the sleep that only she was able to get. "I'll drive, you guys rest," she offered as everyone clambered to the back of the van; blankets and pillows with limbs thrown over each other as sleep came just as quickly as the epidemic did.

"When I asked for a vacation, this isn't want I wanted," Dylan rolled her eyes, throwing her mess of a head into the pillow.

"When I asked for something interesting, they have an odd way of answering wishes," Charlie chuckled as they all grinned to themselves; if you can't make the best of a situation, then it's less of an adventure. "Get some sleep newbie," she laughed, nudging Jordan with the tip of her boot; earning a tired yet meaningful flip of the bird.
