One Drop of Water

Chapter 4 – A New Library

“See you later.” Shanon said. She quickly crossed the street. The side walk was crowded with all of the neighborhood kids. She was saying good bye to Tenichi.
“See ya at school!” Tenichi yelled as some kids bumped into her. She turned around to head to a library when a hugely muscled man came up to her.
“I’d watch Shanon’s back if I were you. You never know who is out there, watching. Ta ta for now.” The man faded into the ocean of people.
“What the hell just happened?” Tenichi thought out loud. She stood there, frozen from confusion. People zoomed by, her mind lost in thoughts. She took it off, and continued to her destination.
“Excuse me. You can’t enter here,” said a slender teenager at the library’s entrance. She looked like an ordinary brunette that would get the hunky guy in the end of a cheesy romance movie.
“What!?! Why not?”
“Because this is the house of Lady Lovely.”
“Lady Lovely? Like Alex, or Izzy?”
“Alex? Izzy? I don’t know them, but Lady Lovely is Shanon. She’s also known as Lady Rein.”
“Lady? Isn’t that a rich person’s title?”
“Yes. If you don’t mind, I’m waiting for someone.”
“Who?”
“Tenichi Ann Miller. Now please leave.” said the gate keeper. She gestured to the exit.
“That’s me!”
“Oh, I’m so sorry. The name’s Ellinor.” Ellinor stuck out her hand. Tenichi slowly stretched out her hand, afraid of skin contact.
“How come you’re waiting for me?”
“I need you to talk to Lady Rein for me.”
“Why don’t you talk to her yourself?”
“Because her adoptive parents won’t let me share anything with her. You need to bring her here, and help her understand. Living her life forward is going to be different. Please help.”
“Wait a minute. Adoptive parents? Living life backwards? What does this all mean!?!”
“Living your life backwards is when you start off old, and get younger until you’re a day old. Shanon was adopted. You should know all about this. You’re the one of the two people who lived life backwards with her. You even kept a diary to remember. It’s in the black books on the shadow covered book case in the library. It’s full of stuff about you, and her. What you did, your purpose, what you knew, and who you guys used to be.”
“Do you have anything on her . . . real family?”
“You did have stuff down. But I’m forbidden to show. Plus those books got burned anyway.”
“What about the house?”
“The house information is through this door to the left by the garden. Have a nice day.”
“Thanks?” That was weird. Better call Shanon to come see this, Tenichi thought to herself. As she dialed Shanon’s number, she walked to the shadowed book case. She quickly skimmed most of the books, gathering every piece of information. “Hey, Shanon! I have some news. Meet me at the new library, okay? Bye.”

Shanon opened her bedroom door, plopping her keys on her desk, her phone vibrated off of it. She picked it up, and listened to the voice mail. “Damn. Tenichi, why didn’t you call me now?” She picked her keys back up, shoved her phone in her pocket, put on her sunglasses, and rushed out the door. She jogged all the way to the library, and almost tripped over Tenichi who was surrounded by books.
“Hey, Tenichi. What’s up?”
Tenichi looked up, and smiled at her. “This whole place is your house.”
“What? How’s that possible? I’m not rich. In fact I’m broke.”
“Ellinor, at the front gate, said so. All of these books are about this place. This one here talks about the history, and that one there by your foot describes the garden. This yin yang colored book is the coolest. Page 666 talks about a grave in a secret passage. I can show you where it is, if you want.”
“Kay?”
“Why do you act like you’re not sure about it?”
“I don’t know. It just seems weird. I mean how can my family have its own cemetery. We don’t even have enough money to pay all of our bills.”
“Who said that was your real family?”
“Uh . . .”
“Exactly.”
“Let’s just go. Okay.” Shanon felt uneasy, and butterflies were stirring in her stomach.
Tenichi stood up, and pulled the only three white books forward. The books gold letters glowed, and the book case slid over. Behind it was a towering, black door. Tenichi opened it and stepped into an unlit corridor. She reached the end motioning for Shanon to follow. As she did, torches light up in a blue blaze, revealing wooden doors her steps echoed against the stone floor. When she reached Tenichi, she was pushed down the silver steps. She caught herself on the stone wall, and continued down the twisted stairway, Tenichi close one her heels. At the bottom was a gate that looked like it belonged to a haunted mansion. Tenichi stopped suddenly, pulling out her phone. “Meet you on the other side of the gate. I have to make a phone call.”
Shanon went to the other side, half hearing what Tenichi was saying into the phone and completely mesmerized by what she saw. Instead of reading Tenichi’s thoughts, she let her mind wonder through forgotten memories form an unknown time.

A little girl ran through a field of roses. Her long flowing dress caught on a thorn, ripping the black dress even more. Spinning around like a ballerina, the girl dances to a silent beat. Her eyes closed as the rain soaked the earth. At the other end, a blond haired girl comes into the meadow. Out of site, she watched the girl dance in the rain. The girl’s face turns to the blonde’s. her eyes smile, and her moon necklace shimmered in the light. The smile in her eyes faded when she saw the blond. A gust of wind blows around, moving the girls black hair over her terrified face. With the wind came a whisper from the blonde’s lips, “Ichi hi, watashi imei satsu otaku, himegimi˚.” The girl’s black eyes went wide, and a shrilling scream filled the air.

Shanon blinked. She looked around, thinking the little girl from her memory was still there. Tenichi followed Shanon to the end of the meadow. When they got there, Tenichi guided Shanon to a crypt. Tenichi checker her watch.
“Ugh. I have to go. It’s three o’clock. Your mom texted me. She says to be home in an hour or

so.”
“Okay. See you tomorrow.” Shanon said, not paying any attention. ‘Wow! Is this my family grave? It couldn’t be. We never had that kind of cash,’ Shanon thought.
“Bye Zetsumei.”
“What?”
“That’s what one of the books said. Apparently it’s your old name.”
“Ooohkay?” Shanon said confused.
