Wrong Place at the Wrong Time

Chapter 4

As I keep walking towards my street the sounds of life around me slowly disappear. I know that someone is following me and me being tired as hell doesn't help either. I'm in no position to fight right now. I need to rest.

And with these thoughts I started to walk up my porch steps. My house is not as big as my parents' but it's doable. I can't live in my parents' house anymore. Wanna know why? Well if you must know then here's the truth: my twin turned it into a Dandy mansion. I have never been that ashamed in my life. And I've done some horrid things in my
lifetime.

As I take a step towards my front door a Dandy appears in front of it blocking my entrance.

"What the hell are you doing here? Wasn't I clear enough yesterday? Cuz I don't think that you'll like another speech." I say looking into his dead eyes.

"I must admit that the speech would be a little over the top, but if that's what has to be done then be it." he answers looking deep in thought.

"Alright then. As I said before, you need to show your respect to peo-"

"I didn't mean you lecturing me!" he raised his voice and his eyes started clouding with anger.

"And what is there for you to lecture me about? I'm just dying out of curiosity." I say as this conversation becomes nothing but an angry fest.

"You're betraying your brother. Your own blood. And that's not something that's gonna go unnoticed." he said as I rolled my eyes.

I am not betraying him. I never said that I was on his side in the first place. Now get off my property before I burn you alive.

You're right, you never said that you're one of us. But you also never mentioned about being one of them. You’re just going to stick with those filthy
blooded hunters? Where did all of your honor and pride go? What happened to the Avery we all knew?

This is the very same Avery! You just never got to know her. And you never will. And mark my words. My brother is going to fall in one of the battles from MY hand. And when he does let's see where your honor and pride will go.

You don't have it in you to kill him. You love him. You can't be that cruel. Where did your heart go?

Same place where you hid yours. In William Beckett's life before death. Now leave.

I'm not so sure about that.

I suggest you run before he turns you into his pawn.

So be it.

One day he will throw you in the battlefield to cover his ass. That's when you will be begging me for mercy. Do you know what my answer will be?

He just shook his head as I chucked.

I would say "Go to hell, Urie" and that's when you'll realize that you made a huge mistake when you crawled back to Will hoping he won't kill your ass.

I was still human and I was a fool but-

I guess that afterlife is not so different after all.

But I never regretted the decision of standing next to him.

If you don't regret that decision why are you here?

To warn you. He will do anything to get you on his side. Anyone can be his spy. Just be careful of who you might befriend.

Don't even think that this warning will get you on my good side. Nothing you do can change the past.

You have no idea of what I would do to get something back from the past. Or maybe find a way to recover it in the present.

What might that be?

Your trust.

It's too late for that and we both know it. Just leave. I don't know about you but my lost heart still hurts when I see someone who taught me a true meaning of betrayal.

Avery I'm sorry. And don't trust the hunters. You don't know anything about them.

I know just enough.

I said I'm sorry.

I suggest you leave now.

"Avery, please. You can't do this." he pleaded but I knew better. Unlike him, I learn from my mistakes.

"Brendon, just leave. I've had enough heartbreak to last forever. And in this life that's alot." I say as I do something I should've done the moment I saw him. I disappeared to the inside of my home. Somewhere where he will remain being uninvited.

I walked into my closet to grab something to change into after the shower. I went to the bathroom and took a quick shower to clear my mind. Sadly it didn’t work. I walked out not bothering to dry my hair and just changed into the clothes I previously picked out.

“Good evening, Syler.” I smiled as I passed him making sure to pat him on the head as he started purring.

I walked into the kitchen to refill his water and food bowl. Then I heard someone knock on the window. I walked towards the bay window. I opened it and sat on the sill letting one of my legs dangle from the outer edge.

“Didn’t I tell you to get lost like half an hour ago?” I asked looking straight ahead avoiding any eye contact with him.

“Yes, but when did I ever listen to you?” He answered with a smirk present in his voice.

“Good point.” I answered and I turned my head to my left making an eye contact. “Why don’t you just go home? It will be easier for both of us.” I say with a heavy sigh.

I miss him. No statement has ever been as true as this one.

“Why can’t you let me in? We used to be best friends.” He whispered searching my eyes for silent answers.

“Emphasis on the word ‘used to’” I snapped back and sharply turned to my right whipping him in his face with my ponytail.

“Okay, I deserve that. But come on, I still need someone to talk to.”

“Well then find some Dandy and spill your guts to him.”

“Or her.” He mumbles and I slowly turn to him with my eyebrows raised and he starts smirking at me. “Jealous?” he asks as his smirk keeps growing. I just raised my hand and slapped him as much force as I could get.

“Guess what?” I leaned closer to his ear. “You deserved that one too.” I whispered softly and leaned away.

“I’m sorry.”

“Apology not accepted.” I answered flatly and kept staring forward. “But did my brother really started turning women for his little army? Cuz that’s a new low even for him.” I say and Brendon shakes his head.

“No. He, or we to be exact, only turn those who love back.” He answers as he moves to sit on the ground by the sill opposite of me. As he did that I put my foot on his raised knee.

“Let me guess, someone got lonely in bed and set a new Dandy law.” I said and he chuckled nodding.

“Something like that.”

“Great.” I groaned. “Now I have even more work to do.” I grumbled and Brendon looked at me with a questioning look. “Now I need to keep the whole female population from you guys.” I said as he joined me in laughter.

“I just realized something.” He said and I looked at him. “We’ve been talking for a while now and you didn’t send me off.” He looked at me with a smile.

“I’m just glad to have at least one part of my old life with me.” I whispered as I kissed the red apple pendant.

“You still wear it.” he smiled wide and I nodded. Then he reached into his jacket pocket revealing the second necklace. “I’m not that different. Just a couple of degrees colder that’s all.” I smiled at that and then got up to his waiting arms.

“You have no idea how much I missed you.” I mumbled against his shoulder.

“I think I got the general idea.” He mumbled against my head.

“You can’t let William know that you come to see me. And I cannot invite you in, I’m sorry. But you cannot let William find out.” I said as I leaned away.

“I’ll protect this secret with my life…well afterlife.” He chuckled and I nodded. “The Dandies will fight tonight. The hunters will be there. So that means that you’ll be there.”

“Yeah, I guess it does.” I chuckled. “You do know that I’m going to kick your ass no matter what tonight.”

“You were right, you are the very same Avery.” He said and I chuckled. “I’ll see you on the battlefield.”

“No you won’t.” I smirked.

“Why’s that?”

“Because you won’t see me coming. You’ll be out before you have a chance to turn around. And I promise that.” I said seriously.

“And I will deserve it.”

“You’re such a pessimist.” I mumbled and he chuckled.

“No, I just know that everything you do has its price.” He said walking away. A few steps later he stopped and turned around with a smirk. “You simply taught me well.” And with that he was gone.

I climbed back through the window I got hissed at.

“I can’t help it, Syler, he’s my best friend.” More hissing “Was my best friend. At least I won’t get heartbroken again.”

With that I went to change again and got ready to head over to the warehouse.
