Punch-Drunk Love

My Own Worst Enemy

The next morning I woke up with a groan, and rolled onto my back. I rubbed my temples slowly, and tried to remember what had happened last night. I racked my brain, but kept coming up blank. I let out a sigh of defeat, before pushing myself up on my elbows, and examining the room. I was in Jess’ spare bedroom, and was joined on the king sized bed by Josh and Stephen.

I stumbled out of bed, making sure to not wake the boys, and padded out of the room into the bathroom. I did my business and washed my hands before pulling my messy hair up into a ponytail. While my arms were up as I smoothed my hair, I noticed a bruise across my elbow, and I couldn’t help but to scrunch my face in confusion at it.

I shrugged it off, and returned to the bedroom, flopping back onto the bed. Josh and Stephen both groaned, and I suppressed a laugh as they raised their heads to look at me.

“Morning,” I said stifling a yawn, “Was I really bad last night? I remember nothing.”

The two shared a look, and sent me nods with small smirks. I buried my face in the pillow, and let out a groan. This caused them to laugh, and I lifted my head up and slightly glared at them.

“What was the worst thing I did?” I said looking at them from the pillow.

“Probably the blowjob part of the speech you gave,” Josh said with a smirk, “Granted, Stephen stopped you, but that was awesome.”

“I gave a speech?” I said with my eyes wide, “Why would I give a speech?”

“Your guess is as good as ours,” Stephen said shrugging, “We had just drank our champagne when you were suddenly on the counter yelling for our attention. You kind of rambled about guys being dicks, and then chugged some chamapagne.”

“Then you almost fell off of the counter,” Josh said as Stephen finished, “You’re always very demanding when you’re drunk. I went to get you water and was gone for maybe a minute, and when I got back you were complaining you couldn’t wait forever.”

“Oh, and you tried throwing your shoes!” Stephen said with a laugh.

“I totally made an ass out of myself last night,” I said hiding my blushing face, “I’m assuming you both brought me up here, so thank you for that.”

“You’re welcome,” they said in unison.

“Oh, and you made us promise not to fire Brian,” Stephen said as an afterthought, “That was the last thing you said before passing out.”

I buried my face deeper in the pillow at the thought of Brian. I had almost completely forgotten about the events from yesterday, and the mention of them made my heart hurt. I felt a few tears well up in my eyes, and felt them soak into the pillow below me. I turned my head away from Josh and Stephen, making them think I was trying to sleep. I sniffled a little, and cursed myself when both of them asked me what was wrong.

“I’m fine, I don’t know what y’all are talking about,” I said reburying my face.

“Sadie, he’s not worth it,” Stephen said patting my shoulder.

“No guys is worth your tears Sadie,” Josh said as I felt the bed shift, “You’re not a whore, by any means. Audra was the whore, and wanted to make herself look better, so she made you look bad.”

“That’s a great way to talk about your girlfriend,” I said with a laugh.

“She was never my girlfriend,” he said shaking his head, “Being the man whore I am, I used her for sex. Which wasn’t that great anyways.”

Stephen and I groaned, telling him that was more than we needed to know, and he let out one of his signature laughs. I couldn’t help but to laugh with him, and even Stephen joined in. once we were done laughing like little kids, we just laid in silence and I felt myself start to doze off. I never got fully asleep, because Miranda and John burst through the door a few minutes later.

“WAKE THE FUCK UP BITCHES!” John shouted jumping on the bed followed by Miranda.

“God dammit John, I will kill you,” Stephen said yanking John’s legs out from under him.

“You kill him, I got Miranda,” I said as she stopped jumping.

“Thanks best friend,” she said plopping down on her bottom.

“You know I wouldn’t love,” I said stretching my hands above my head.

“Christ Sadie, what’s that bruise from?” John asked looking over at me.

“No idea,” I said shrugging.

“You fell into the bathtub after using the bathroom last night,” Josh said laughing, “You laughed really heard about it too.”

“I shouldn’t be allowed to drink,” I said laughing with him, “So what’s on the agenda for today?”

“Movies in Jess’ basement?” John suggested earning a round of nods, “I guess we should wake up that sleeping beauty too.”

We all piled off of the crowded bed, and woke Jess up, who was cuddled with a teddy bear in her bed. She blushed, chucking the teddy bear behind her, and sitting up. We told her our plan, and she agreed to it, saying we had to clean up before we did anything.

We all cleaned quickly, seeing as the party hadn’t gotten out of control like normal, and in no time we had a pizza ordered, and we all huddled in the movie room in the basement watching movies.

======

Stephen drove me home later that night, and I ran across our front lawns, trying to escape the rain. I quickly unlocked the door, and bolted up to my bedroom. I took a quick shower, washing the alcohol smell off of my skin, and got redressed in some sweatpants and a tank top.

I padded down the stairs, telling my mom hello as she sat in front of the living room TV, and grabbed a cup out of the cabinet. I filled it up with water from the fridge, and started back up to my room. There was a knock at the door, and I looked at it confused before opening it slowly. My eyes widened as I saw who was standing behind it in the pouring rain.
