A List of Best Intentions

Epilogue

’99 was a crazy year for me. And when I’m watching the music channel, watchin’ this I Dig the 90s thing they’re doing, it’s crazy to me how they can sum up an entire year in one hour.

I’d never be able to do that. It would take a day for me to explain every little thing that went on in my life in 1999 and how it changed me, maybe even more than a day. All I know is that those were the days.

I guess it’s kinda cool, you know? It’s 2010 right now, at least when I’m thinkin’ about this. It’s only been about eleven years, and still, so much has changed. I got a little cell phone in my pocket. My mp3 player’s charging right now. My car tells me when someone’s standing behind it. In my apartment, we got a little flatscreen TV. And our computer doesn’t crash nearly as much as it did back then.

When I was a teenager, I never imagined where I’d end up. Yeah, I had dreams – everyone does when they’re that age. When I was thirteen I wanted to be a rock star. Fourteen, a movie star. Fifteen…I don’t know. I didn’t give a lot of thought to that kinda stuff back then.

Cody ended up bein’ an architect in Atlanta. Keisha’s married to him and she’s doing little gigs down in coffee shops ‘round here, and two years ago they had a little girl named Delia. (Keisha’s pianist, Jackie? Well…she kinda made a name for herself. She just doesn’t go by Jackie anymore.) Stephanie’s a teacher at Tanglewood Junior High and all the students love her ‘cause they can come to her about problems more easily than the guidance counselor. Nick’s still in college studying film.

I Am You Are signed to a pop-punk label a few years ago and did a huge benefit concert down in Florida about a year ago, and Matchboxingmatch is still keeping the ska flame alive. Elton’s in a sitcom right now that’s in its seventh season, while Charlie’s still trying to break into Broadway. Dakota…um, well…I don’t know where he is. They say he went to Mexico when he was nineteen and he never came back.

Tungsten got hit by a truck when she ran away one rainy day in 2005. I took her with me when I moved into my own apartment after turning eighteen, and she lived a pretty good life. It was a short life, but hey, she was always happy.

Right now I’m a sound tech at the amphitheater downtown. I like my job. Was it what I imagined doing ten years ago? No. But like I learned in ’99, life plays tricks on you. You never know what you’re gonna end up doin’. I did a few years of community college, decided it wasn’t for me, and here I am now, loving life again.

The channel ends its I Dig the 90s streak and some other boring reality show comes on. I flip channels. Passing by boring shows I wouldn’t be caught dead watching, I stumble across the History channel.

I burst out laughing.

Guess what they’re showing a documentary on?

2012.

I wonder if anyone’s gonna follow in my footsteps for that one.

Hey everyone! I said I'd post the epilogue today, so I did - and now we're officially done with this story again! :,)

Thank you to anybody who read, commented, subscribed, and/or recced! It's all very appreciated and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I loved writing this story in the first place. I hope that some kind of corny moral came through, even if it was just basically YOLO (which...uh...kind of ended up happening). Stay positive - it'll always get better. :)

Thanks for reading! :D
