Men and Their Dragons

Science vs. Magic

“…and then by adding y you find that the solution is not n over x, but indeed n plus y over 2x. This causes the entire equation to become much more solvable with the exact time that passes because then you can change b with-”

“-with just another bloody half-hour of numbers and symbols that I’ll never use in my life, and don’t even want to see from now on, so don’t even get started.”

The blonde woman that was still erasing and fixing the equation on the front board with much ease, grinned wicked to herself, but she hid it quickly and turned back around to look at the auditorium that had been very quiet as they watched her work.

The bell rang.

“Well sir, it seems that you’re lucky enough to be saved by the bell today.”

Charlie Weasley rolled his eyes, never removing the smug look from his face, and pushed himself away from the back wall of the makeshift classroom.

The professor, who had been watching with much interest, stood up from his seat in the front row and cleared his throat. It seemed that being out-done by a student was rare for him and he tried to cover it up.

“Thank you Miss… Chambers was it?” he didn’t wait for a reply. “For that… intriguing explanation on the Photon theory of Light,” he said, his voice heard over the shuffling of papers and bags of the thirty or so students in there. “Don’t forget that your essay on Newton’s Laws are due Monday by noon!”

“Miss Chambers” placed the cap on the dry-erase marker and quickly hopped down from the slight stage at the front and grabbed her notes and bag.

“So… ‘Miss Chambers’ is it this time?”

The blonde woman turned her head to look over her shoulder to find a freckled face and smoldering blue-green eyes digging into her soul.

“Oh shut it, you prat,” she hissed playfully and continued to place things in the shoulder bag. After it was zipped, the strap was unsurprisingly taken from her. “It’s men like you that keep chivalry alive, Charlie.”

“And it is women like you, Darien, that make us want to keep being gentlemen.” That earned him a hit in the shoulder, directly on one of the many bruises he had already gotten over the past week from having to wrestle a few Romanian Longhorns.

Darien quickly shushed him and glanced over at the professor who was too busy with trying to figure out his computer to care about his “star” student and ignored the two. She was quick to get out of the classroom and to the storage room that she had made sure to charm.
“My name is Becca Chambers, Charlie. Don’t go calling me by Darien!” she hissed, yet again, but this time she serious. Darien looked at her watch and pulled the redhead into the storage room with her. Another wicked grin covered his face.

“My, my, who knew you were up for something in such a place… Kinky, I must say, but I thought you had better tastes.”

Darien scowled him and Charlie quickly disarmed the illusion charm that he had made over the unconscious blonde woman that lay in the storage room; for now, that is. She glanced down at her watch again and silently counted down the last few seconds. After the last second was counted, her body turned from that of Becca Chambers to the one and only Darien Towers.

The straight white-blonde color of her hair that went just past her shoulders became longer and darker until they reached black; the curls were the archenemy of any brush or comb. The pale-white skin bubbled to dark, also, to the shade of caramel; it was only a shade or two lighter. She shuddered as another spasm went through her body and the Polyjuice potion wore off completely. Her first try with Polyjuice potion as a Squib had not turned out very well. Then, she tried a few more times, and found that Squibs could still use it but she had to put a special ingredient in. Dragon talon; now that wasn’t a very hard thing to find for Darien.

Charlie always wondered why she did this. What was the purpose as posing as one of the students when she could be a student herself? Charlie only shook his head, pushing back the red hair that moved to cover his eyes and watched as she quickly changed from the outfit that the ‘Becca’ person had been wearing to her usual baggy denim jeans and solid random-color button up shirt with the brown leather boots that had seen better days.

Darien turned back around and grinned just as the bell rang for the next class to begin.

Charlie would never understand this woman even if he had the manual to the way her mind worked. It would probably be in some weird ancient language anyways.

“Remind me why I’m actually letting you dress up as people so you can be a know-it-all for an hour?” he asked, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as they walked down the now empty halls of some muggle college in some weird state that started with an ‘a’ and looked like the name of one Darien’s cousins.

“Well . . . to tell you the truth, I forgot after about the fifth time of doing this. I think you just came along for the ride.” Darien only shrugged.

Their footsteps echoed through the empty college hallway. Both were fitted in Muggle clothing, so they fit right in. It wasn’t until the two stopped at the end of the hall that everyone was fooled.

Darien glanced over at the small black sphere that was hanging from the ceiling. It was a security camera, something muggles used when looking for people who weren’t supposed to be there, or if they needed evidence for anything. She grinned wickedly and gave a small wave.

The two strangers, one formerly disguised as a ditzy blonde by the name of Becca Chambers now with frizzy back hair and a light golden tan, holding a gift-wrapped present with a beautiful red bow on top, along with a strange man with natural reddish-orange hair with a burn scar on his arm that could be seen since the cuffed sleeve of his shirt had been rolled-up, disappeared with a loud “pop” that echoed just as their footsteps once did.

The two guards looking over the scene from the camera gasped and quickly tried to playback the video, but all they saw was just an empty hall.

“We don’t get paid enough for this . . .” One of them murmured and went back to his book.
