The Same Mistake

Monday, January 5 - Afternoon (2).

Ellie’s heart jolted into action, beating hard within her chest, her anger with Draco palpable. “You’re not the only one who will be affected by these matters, Draco. My family is in danger. I have a right to know what he said to you.”

“Nothing! Nothing that concerns you,” Draco burst out angrily.

Feeling quite taken aback, Ellie looked up at Draco. His grey eyes were distraught. Whatever his words might say, Ellie knew that what he wasn’t telling her did indeed concern her, concerned her so much that Draco felt he was protecting her by not telling her.

“If you don’t want to tell me now, I can accept that. But I deserve to know, if it does have something to do with me. You must know that.” Ellie’s eyes met Draco’s grey glare.

Draco didn’t reply. Knowing there was nothing more to be said, Ellie reached out to turn the door knob of the closet. She looked back at Draco, her gaze determined, but this time he didn’t meet her eyes. Frowning sadly, Ellie left.

She climbed the many stairs to the Gryffindor Tower, her fingers trembling the whole way. When she reached her dorm, she picked up a clean sheet of parchment and a quill. Sitting down at the corner desk, Ellie began to write with trembling fingers. Her writing was slanted and smeared in places where her fear seeped through the lines of prose.

He knows – I believe my position could be compromised if a new cover is not formed – I need to know that my parents are alright – please take care of them – take whatever measures necessary t o protect them – I am requesting further directions . . .

With racing thoughts and an aching heart, Ellie folded the letter, dug into her trunk to retrieve a small bottle of blue powder. This letter was too important to take chances. Ellie pinched the powder, dropped a tiny amount onto the letter, and watched in anxiety as the letter went up in blue flames.
