Everybody Has a Reason

The Feeling Of Normality.

The next few days, Lila settled in, getting use to how Maria worked and did things. Maria was a bit of a neat freak, liked everything to be clean. Lila didn’t mind.
Lila found her way around the town, it didn’t take her long. There was only three clothes shops, 2 chippies, one small pub, one laundrette, one post office which doubled as a café. And another separate café which turned into a restaurant at night. It took her 20 minutes to walk from one end of the town, to the other. Again, she didn’t mind.

It was finally Sunday, three days since she came here. Lila decided to go for a walk around again, clear her mind. She found herself, around the back of the houses, a field nearby her own house. She breathed in deeply, the beautiful grassy hills in front of her. She climbed up the cold railings, and sat comfortably, she zipped her coat all the way up and rearranged her beanie hat on her head. It was May here in Ireland, it wasn’t the warmest time of the year.

Staring into the hills, her thoughts escaping her. She didn’t feel like crying anymore, she just felt…alone.

Suddenly, she heard footsteps treading on the ground. Lila didn’t want to look, so she waited, till she saw two hands beside her, the person was leaning forward on the railings. Lila realized it was Connor, as she saw his tattoo again. She felt herself relax as he spoke.

“You know, my Dad use to say that when someone is thinking with a troubled face, it means they’re thinking too much” says Connor’s voice clearly

Lila didn’t look away from the scene in front of her.

“You look troubled Lila” states Connor. Lila shook her head, not knowing how to reply.

“Mind if I join you?” he asks suddenly. Lila shrugged, not wanting to appear bothered but inside, she really wanted him to sit beside her. Just so she wouldn’t feel so alone.

Connor, climbed up and sat beside her, exhaling and staring at the beautiful picture in front of them.

“Have you been around the town?” he asks, looking at her gently. Lila looked at him tiredly.

“Yeah, several times. There’s not much here you know” she says like it was obvious. Connor smirked, as she had said something amusing.

“You haven’t been around town with me though?” he teases lightly, nudging her arm slightly. Lila couldn’t help but smile, it was just easy to with Connor around.

“What’s the difference?” asks Lila curiously, turning her head slightly towards him. Connor smirks.

“It’s always more fun to go around town with someone, besides I’m the coolest guy here” he jokes. Lila laughs and she realized, it felt good to.

“Big-headed much?” she teases, looking at him. He really was beautiful.

“No, just honest. So you coming up what? I know all the secrets of this little village” he says, jumping off the railings, then vaulting back over to the other side. Lila however, just put one leg over and shifted on her hands, carefully so not to fall.

“What secrets?” Lila asks suddenly, replaying their conversation in her head. Connor smiled secretively.

“That’s for me to know, and you to find out” he recites. With a helping hand from Connor, Lila jumps off, landing with a quiet thud and the set off, side by side towards the main centre. Connor bringing up topics, while Lila casually answered now and again.

“Okay, so now this is our first stop on our McGill Tour” says Connor, standing in front of a very old looking café.

“Um…” says Lila, unsure. Connor laughed, seeing her response.

“You may be surprised, but this place does THE best vanilla ice cream in the whole entire world” he brags, emphasizing ’the’. Lila smiled, she loved the way he talked.

“Oh really? I’m more of a Chocolate kind of girl” she jokes, as Connor held the door open for her, to her surprise, a bell went off alerting the whole café that someone had come in. They both sit down at the nearest booth, facing each other.

“Chocolate? Really…god, you city girls don’t know what your missing” he teases, winking at her.

“City girls?” repeats Lila, confused. Connor nods.

“Yeah, you’re from the city. I can tell.” he says confidently.

“How so?” tests Lila. Connor smirks and leans forward, he was so close to her now.

“You sound it, you look it and you smell it. Sweetheart” he says. Lila blinked, staring into those dark green orbs of his. She felt herself flip inside. Connor chuckles and leans back and soon a waiter comes to the table.

“Alright Connor? Who’s the pretty gal?” says the waiter, he looked slightly older then both of them, he was tall, nice looking with blonde hair and brown eyes, light brown freckles on his nose.

Connor smiled at him, in a some sort of proud manner. “This is Lila, she’s Maria’s goddaughter” he introduces. The guy seemed to know the name and winked.

“Ah, Maria. The love of my life.” he teases, but this alarmed Lila. Maria was about 39 years old, the boy only looked 25 if that.

“Don’t look alarmed Lila, Johnny here has a soft spot for Maria. But he also has a wife and two kids” he says and Lila couldn’t help but blush. ‘Johnny’ chuckled and it seemed to echo around the room.

“So what will it be mate?” he asks, pen and pad in the hand readily. Connor points to Lila.

“Two scoops of Daisy’s Vanilla. No Chocolate” and Lila couldn’t help smile to herself. Johnny nods and disappears. Connor looks back at Lila, watching her gaze out the window.

“So Lila, what music do you like?” he asks, watching her stunning blues look at him again, a smile at her lips.

“Good music” she states and Connor couldn’t help laugh at her humour. She looked pleased with herself and grinned. Connor noticed the happiness in her smile, she should always smile thought Connor.

“Ah, well that’s good then. You’ll have to come see me play sometime” he jokes. Lila smiling teasingly.

“What makes you think you make the cut for my tastes?” she jokes. Connor smirks.

“What if my music is too good for your tastes?” he challenges. Lila was stumped so just half smiled.

“Fair played. Maybe” she says gently. Johnny came back, with a small glass frosted bowl, filled with two scoops, a wafer stick stuck in one of them.

“Enjoy, Lila. Prepare to be impressed” says Johnny brightly, and he went to the next table, of a middle aged women.

Lila stared at the wafer stick and she automatically picked it out, breaking it in half equally and sticking one in Connor’s scoop and one in hers. Connor watched her in amazement and curiosity.

“Should I ask?” he says, after she’d done. She looked up again, staring right at him.

“Me and my brother use to do it all the time” she says in a sad, disappointed voice and Connor knew that he shouldn’t press it, it was a touchy subject.

“Have a try then” says Connor, and he watched her as she tried some of this supposedly amazing ice cream.

Spooning a small amount in her mouth, Lila tasted it and she was pleased to say that the expectations of it, remained high.

“Good?” asks Connor, hopefully. Lila smiles widely.

“It’s amazing” she says honestly, Connor looked triumphant, as he ate his scoop generously. Lila took bigger mouthfuls then. This Ice cream as possibly, the best she’d ever tasted.

--

After the ice cream wonder, Connor showed Lila the sights that most tourists don’t see. The fact that the table right on the corner of the small pub gave you the best view of the village. She discovered lots of fun facts about the town, the history but what Lila loved most what just listening to Connor talk so passionately about his village.

After a good few hours talking, walking and laughing too. It was 5pm and it was time for Connor to leave, Lila was surprised to feel herself disappointed, when they were walking back up the hill to where their house’s were.

“You know, my Ma’s made a Roast for an army almost. She wouldn’t mind if I bring to dinner” says Connor suddenly, his hands in his coat pockets.

Lila stopped looking at the floor and looked at Connor, surprised. “I don’t know Connor, I mean…Maria”

“Maria works till 6 Lila” he says, Lila felt a bit concerned again. Why did he know everything?

“The offer stands” says Conner and Lila found herself panicking inside. “No-” she says and Connor looks at her amused.

“I mean-” stutters Lila, embarrassed to have blurt it out.

“I take it you want to come then?” teases Conner, Lila nods slowly. “Please” she adds and Connor smiles, sending butterflies to Lila’s stomach, yet again.

Walking to Conner’s past too quickly, Lila felt herself getting sucked in. She wanted to know why she wanted to be with Conner still, was it because she felt what she hadn’t felt in a while?

Normality.
