World So Cold

Numb

“Juliet, what happened?” asked Stefan. I shook my head refusing to say. I couldn’t tell him anything of what happened. Either Damon would kill me for saying something to Stefan or Stefan would go and try and kill Damon. Nobody could know. The secrets of what happened would remain with me and Damon. Stefan wouldn’t approve anyway.

The next couple days passed with me just sitting in Stefan’s room. I didn’t do much but sit there and sleep. I wouldn’t even go hunting. Finally Stefan asked me to go hunting.

“Juliet, you have to eat something.” I shook my head. “You need to. You have to keep up your strength. Nobody knows when the next attack could occur and you need to be as strong as possible.”

“I can’t, Stefan,” I said, my voice choked up.

“Why not?” he asked gently.

“Because I’m afraid if I do, I won’t stop.” A single tear fell from eyes. “The urge, the need to kill is so strong…” I trailed off finding it incomparable to anything that came to mind.

Elena came later that day. Stefan went down to greet her. I tuned out anything else and bowed my head. I felt so defeated. I felt so empty. Suddenly someone touched my arm and I looked up to see who it was.

Katherine my mind spoke. Immediately I moved and lunged for her. Stefan was there an instant, holding me back as she fell to the floor in surprise. I was weak from lack of blood so he was able to hold me. “Juliet, it’s Elena,” Stefan shouted trying to get me to stop.

“Elena?” I said puzzled, stopping my fight. I blinked clearing the blind rage from my vision. Seeing her standing there, a wide, terrified expression on her face I knew that it was Elena, not Katherine. Elena who Damon had fed from. “Go to hell you bitch,” I hissed. I didn’t try and attack her. I thought this was an improvement. Nobody else did though.

Tears welled up in Elena’s eyes at my outburst and Stefan immediately let go of me. I sank down into the chair since Stefan wasn’t supporting me. My hair fell into my face covering half of it as I glared at Elena.

Quickly Stefan ushered her out of the room. I heard their footsteps travel to another room and knew they were still here. If I wasn’t so weak I would’ve killed her, I thought smugly. She’d be dead and Damon would mine.

You know that’s not true, another part of me argued. Damon would just find some other girl. He’s the one you should hate.

I stood up suddenly wanting blood. Craving it, needing it more than I had in awhile. I did it more out of instinct than conscience thought as I burst open the trap door and stepped out into the misty air. It wrapped me in a chill that seemed to penetrate to my core.

Shaking it off I jumped off the roof and onto the ground below. Quickly I ran into the woods. I wasn’t too deep when the scent hit me. The smell of blood. I made my way towards it and stopped when I saw them. Three guys huddled around a campfire that was slowly going.

Without thinking I ran into the clearing and bit into the neck of the guy that was closest to me. I heard the cries and shouts of the other guys as I bit and quickly took some blood. Looking up at the other guys I quickly subdued both of them, compelling them to remain still and quiet.

I drank fully from the guy, his blood soothing my throat. I was still hungry though and once he died I let him fall. I looked up towards the other two guys and smiled. I could hear their elevated pulses and the flutter of their heartbeats.

“Who’s next?” I asked before jumping and attacking the next guy. He didn’t fight me or scream due to my compulsion and I was able to drink deeply. After that guy was drained I moved onto the next one. I could feel the blood dripping down my chin and coating my mouth as I bit into his throat.
