The Sun Makes Shadows

Horizon

Matt’s POV

I was relieved when we finally left. I could hardly stand to be in that orphanage. If it were up to me we would’ve never have gone in the first place...though I guess it was up to me. I glanced at my wife to see her absolutely beaming. I never knew that kids really did this to women. I gave her a quick peck on the lips and said, “Mmm, ready to go home babe?”

She nodded. “I think I already love that girl. And I’m sorry for doubting you before. Teens don’t really get adopted, so saving her life would make mine complete.” She sighed, hand over her heart.

“I thought I made your life complete?” I asked as I started up the car to head home.

“But you’re only half of my family! I would like another half-and since I can’t do that my self...” She paused and I grabbed her hand to comfort her, though my insides churned.

“Don’t say things like that.” I whispered. “You can do anything you want, even have kids. Adopting is a good way to be defiant.” I felt my head begin to fill with guilt, and I quickly changed the subject. “Look at that sunset.”

“Yeah,” She said, then looked at me. “Nyaa reminds me of that sunset, so beautiful yet going down. I hope to help her live up to her name. Make her that sun that shines bright.” I raised an eyebrow and she elaborated. “Nyaa means sun, and I think it fits her perfectly. You heard her when she told us, right?”

Actually, I hadn’t. But I wasn’t about to admit that. “Yeah, sorry. I’m just tired.”

“I’m sorry Matty. I’m just so excited!” I knew she was excited, she used my pet name. It was only preserved for her, of course. When we got home we went straight up the front porch steps and she went to the kitchen to make dinner. I plopped down in front of the TV hoping that nothing went wrong.
