This Dream Isn't Done

I get to Ashlynn’s apartment and I knock on the door. I stay there for a few minutes, waiting but no one answers and I look around. I walk to the place beside her and knock, within seconds, Liam answers.
“Hey,” he says, “Alex, right?”
I nod, “do you know where Ashlynn is?”
“Yeah,” he replies, “her and Sammy went to Cancun.”
“Cancun?”
He nods, “they left Tuesday.”
“When will they be back?” I ask.
“Tomorrow.”
“Okay,” I hesitate as I stare at him, “why didn’t you go?”
“It was a girls trip,” he shrugs, “I don’t think they wanted a guy to tag along.”
“Oh,” I say, “I figured Ashlynn would want you to go.”
“Ashlynn?” He chuckles, “why would she?”
I pause, a little confused, “aren’t you dating?”
He shakes his head, “no. Did someone say we were?”
I sigh, relieved, “I thought you were. Jack mentioned you when he saw Ashlynn at the coffee place with you and you went to the wedding with her.”
“Oh,” he says, “nah, just friends. Sammy and I are kind of an item though.”
“You and Sammy?” I ask.
“Yeah.”
“Oh,” I say quietly, “well, thanks, I appreciate the information.”
He nods, “no problem.”
He closes his door and I look over at Ashlynn’s place. I shove my hands into my pockets and I begin to head home. Forgetting why I came.
“Hey,” Renee greets me when I get in.
“Hey,” I reply.
“Where did you go?”
“For a walk.”
“Anywhere in particular?” She digs.
I sigh, “I went over to Ashlynn’s.”
“Ashlynn's? Why?” She asks.
“I don’t know,” I reply, growing a little annoyed and I feel a little guilty after.
She sighs, “Alex?”
I look over at her, “yeah?”
She hesitates, “I don’t think we should be together anymore.”
“You don’t?”
She shakes her head, “you seem to love Ashlynn still. You should be with her.”
“She doesn’t want me.”
“Have you asked?”
I look at her, slowly shaking my head. She gives me a weak smile.
“What about our trip?” I ask.
She gets up, “maybe that can help things along with you two.”
She walks over to me, giving me a small kiss on my cheek, “bye, Alex.”
“Bye,” I say quietly and I watch as she walks out.
I remain still, wishing like crazy tomorrow would come faster.
