This Dream Isn't Done

Family Bonding

“Hello mom!” I call walking into the house.
“In the kitchen!”
I walk inside and see mom at the counter, batter all around.
“What are you doing?” I laugh.
“Making treats.”
“Why?”
“Because I want to,” she smiles.
“Want help?” I offer.
“Always,” she replies as she tosses me an apron.
I move beside her and look at the baking book to see what she’s making. She moves over to the stove as I make little balls for the cookies.
“How was the tour?” She asks.
“It was fun,” I reply, “but it’s always better to be at home.”
“Be with your momma,” she smiles and rubs my back.
I chuckle, “of course.”
She goes back to whatever and I continue on.
“Have you seen Eric since being back?”
I sigh, “yeah.”
“How is he?” Mom really liked him.
“He seemed good,” I reply quietly, “haven’t you seen him around?”
“No, I haven’t been going out too much.”
“Oh.”
“But Alex has actually come over a couple of times.”
I stop, “what?”
“Yeah, actually we saw each other at the store and I invited him for coffee,” she explains, “after that, he came over almost every weekend and we would chat.”
“Chat about what?”
“You,” she says, “a little, actually. I guess just to get to know each other better.”
“Weird,” I whisper, mainly to myself.
“He’s really nice,” she continues.
I roll my eyes, “yeah.”
“How come you don’t date him?”
I can hear my heart in my chest, “he’s with someone.”
“Really? That’s got to be recent, he never said anything.”
“I think they’ve been together for a month.”
“Hm,” she says as she puts the cookies on a cookie sheet.
We stop talking about Alex there, and I’m happy about it. I stay there for a few hours and eventually go home. I reach my apartment and I see something in the door. I walk over and grab it. An invitation. We have a new neighbor. I push open my door, heading inside and tossing the invitation onto the table and go change. I come back out and relax on my couch, reading over the invitation. All it says is the apartment and the person. A guy…great. I toss it back on the table and stare up at the ceiling, realizing how boring life is when I’m not touring or doing an album
