The Demon Princess and the Vampire Princes

Chapter X

Chapter X
The Hunt

“Alright, well, I gotta go. When night falls —”

“You gotta dance.” I roll my eyes at Tobias as he grins back at me.

“You comin’? I hear there’s this new club that just opened up. Everyone who’s anyone is gonna be there,” Tobias says, grinning at me as I roll my eyes, “And you know it only gets worse the longer you wait.”

“Goodbye, Tobias,” I snap angrily, narrowing my eyes at him suspiciously, “I will be back soon, Tobias, so stop worrying.”

“Just making sure you know what’ll happen if you don’t.” He rolls his eyes, walking away.

“What’s he talking about?” Abel asks, looking up at me with his big brown eyes.

“Nothing. Lets go get you ready for bed. Now.

He nods, catching on to what I was hinting. He follows me to his bedroom, where I sat down on his bed, patting the spot beside me. “So, what’s going on?”

“Remember that secret I asked you to keep for me?”

“Yeah. Of course. How could I forget that you’re —”

Shh! They are right outside of that door,” I hiss angrily. I sigh. “Abel, I will be leaving soon.”

“What? Why?!”

It was the same reaction that Blaze had given me. I gave him a sad smile. “There is a war coming up … between Vampires and Hell. I have to. If I do not leave …”

My throat closed, and I tried swallowing away the lump. Abel wrapped his tiny arms around my waist, and I knew that he understood. “I get it, Nix, but I’ll miss you. Blaze will, too, I know it.”

“I will miss you both, too, but I will see you again soon.”

“What about Tobias?”

“Tobias will still be just a call away for you. If you need anything, anything at all, call him. I have trusted Tobias with my life, and he has never failed me.”

“Tobias is fun! How can he belch the entire alphabet?”

“Years and years of practice, Abel. Now, go get ready for bed. It is getting late.”

“Okay.” He gave me a final squeeze before heading over to take his bath and other things before he goes to bed.

Tobias was right. I should’ve never gotten close. It hurts too much.

I stayed up all night, and explored all day. If I went back without some kind of report then my father was sure to become suspicious. But, it wasn’t like I could just go around snooping my nose in places where it really didn’t belong in the first place.

“Pixie, what’s wrong?” Blaze asks, walking into my bedroom.

“Nothing,” I say, continuing to pace.

“My brothers are right outside the door,” Blaze whispers in my ear.

“Let them.”

“Pixie.”

“No, I refuse to play along. I will have to leave soon.”

“Pixie …” I look at him angrily, almost instantly regretting it. “Don’t give me that —”

“I do not belong anywhere, Blaze, and you need to get that. I am nothing like you. You need to accept that fact.”

“Please, don’t do this.”

“If I do not, then who will?”

I grab my cell phone, and head out of the bedroom. “Hey, Sarah!” Tyrone says, grinning at me. I walk quickly past him, keeping my head down so that I didn’t have to look at them. I knew that they were there. All of them.

“Nix?” Abel asks, running to keep up to my fast pace. “Where are you going?”

“Back to the place where my suffering began.” I sigh, looking down at Abel with his big brown eyes and curly brown hair.

“Home?”

“I do not belong anywhere, Abel, but I guess that is what you would call it.”

“Don’t leave me!” Abel clings to my leg, making me stumble slightly to the side. “Kenton said that the war wouldn’t start for at least a month. You can stay till then, right?”

“Abel …” I try prying him off my leg, but he may as well have been super-glued to it. “You do not understand.”

“You promised …” Abel says, tears filling up his brown eyes, “You promised that you’d tell Blaze. You also promised me that you wouldn’t hurt me.”

“And if I leave then you will be safe. Trust me, Abel, the less that know about me the better. Now, please, let go.”

“Not until you tell Blaze!”

“Abel, you are not making this any easier.”

I finally pull him off, setting him down gently. “I promise you that I will see you again. But, remember, you promised me that you would not tell Blaze my secret, alright?” Abel nods his head, a few tears escaping. “Do not cry. You will see me again.”

I walk away quickly, unable to handle the emotions that were taking over. I started running. No. I will not cry. I will not cry because of them.

I finally make it to the gate, hearing the guards swarm around me. I look around, completely surrounded by the guards with their silver-tipped spears. Oh, crap. I could feel my wings spread out behind me, blacker than night, as I begun flying higher up into the sky. They throw their spears, distracting me as I dodged helplessly. One hits my wing, sending me off balance. My head hits the freezing cold iron of the gate, and I felt dizzy. I desperately hung onto the top of it, my nails trying to find something to cling to that could keep me from falling. Another silver-tipped spear hits my back, penetrating the skin there. I let out a screeching-like scream of agony as my blood that was as black as my wings slowly left my body, sliding down the gate, and to the ground below. A third spear hits my other wing, and I let go to fall. Down, down, down. All the way to small brown path that led from the castle’s doors to this gate that would’ve been my only way to escape.

When I awoke, I was back in the dungeon. I was freezing cold, and shivered. The chains that held me rattled, and stung against my wrists and ankles. I stayed lying on the freezing ground, not quite sure what else there was to do. The door screeched as it opened, hurting my ears though I scarcely noticed. I didn’t bother looking at whoever had entered my cell. I didn’t really care.

“What aren’t you telling me, Pixie?” I knew that voice all-too well. It was deep, and sounded full of emotion that he was trying to suppress. I didn’t look up at him. I felt too weak to do anything at all.

“Just kill me,” I say barely above a whisper, my voice raspy probably from the coolness of this prison.

“I don’t want you dead.” He kneeled down in front of me, trying to meet my eyes as they stared at the ground. “But, why don’t you trust me?”

“I trust you, Blaze, but you do not understand.”

“What? How am I expected to understand if you don’t tell me, Phoenix Seraphina?”

“Princess,” I say quietly, squeezing my eyes tightly shut.

“What?”

“Princess. My name is Princess Phoenix Seraphina.”

“What do you mean?”

“Exactly what I said. I am the daughter of the King of Hell. When I turn twenty-one I will take the throne.” Blaze was silent. I knew it was a lot to take in. “I was ten when Tobias took me in. He taught me who and how to kill. He helped me escape.”

“Escape what?”

I stayed silent. I didn’t really want to talk about it. Only Tobias knew why I left. Nobody ever asked.

He stood up, and I glanced at him. It looked like he was a cross between angry … and hurt. I felt guilty. I knew that I was the one who did that to him. “I am sorry,” I say quietly.

“Do you even know the meaning of sorry?”

“Yes. It is not something defined by the mind, but felt by the heart. I do not say things that are not from the heart.”

“Deep. Do you phrase everything like that?”

“When I feel like it.” I close my eyes tiredly. The freezing temperature was taking a lot from me.

“Pixie, are you okay?”

“I am fine,” I lie.

“You look like the life’s been sucked out of you.”

I stayed silent. I felt his hand on my forehead, and it was warmer than usual. “I am fine.” I hated lying to him.

“You feel like a block of ice.”

“Your hand is warm.”

“Yep, it’s official. You’re sick.”

“Demons do not get sick.”

“Yeah, well, you’re definitely not normal.” He pulls out a key, grabbing my chains, and unlocking them. “Come on, lets get you out of here.” He picks me up off the frigid ground, holding me close to his chest. He felt … warm. Maybe I was sick.

“I have to … go,” I say tiredly, feeling absolutely weak.

“Not right now.”

“I … have to.”

“Not right now.”

“Prince Blaze, we can take the prisoner,” one of the guards says, standing in front of us.

“No, I’ve got her.”

“You are aware of what she is, sir?”

“Yeah, but she’s not very dangerous.”

“Are you sure, sir?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine.”

“Blaze, I heard —”

Kenton came rushing into the bedroom where I sat, staring wide-eyed at me. I nearly go darting before Blaze comes in,  grabbing me, and holding me there.

“So, it’s true?”

I nodded, not meeting anyone’s eyes. Nobody knew I was the Princess of Hell, but everyone knew I was a Demon.

“WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!!!”

“Pixie doesn’t want to fight us,” Blaze says, rolling his eyes, “She’s staying here until winter. Then she’ll be leaving for Hell.”

“To fight like the rest,” Kenton growls angrily.

“I will not fight. The rest might be blood-thirsty, but I have learned self-control,” I say quietly, “I left Hell for a reason, but I have to go back eventually.”

“You better watch your back,” Kenton growls angrily.

I step forward, glaring furiously at him. “If I wanted you dead then I would have killed you by now.” I knew he didn’t believe me, and that’s why I continued, “There is a group of Demons. They work against the normal lifestyle of a Demon. They are called the Rejects. Tobias and I are one of them.”

“Prove it.”

“I can walk into a church, and I can go a week without killing. I might be a creature that was made for sins, but that does not make me one to choose it.” I glare up at him for another minute before I heard the heavy and quick footsteps of a Demon.

“Phoenix Seraphina, your father has declared war,” Tobias says gravely.

“What?!” I look around, and run to the window that showed the entire Kingdom. I could see the Demons, hiding very boldly in the shadows. “Why?”

“He got paranoid. He heard a rumor of a Demon being held prisoner —”

“In the Vampire palace,” I finish for him, sighing aloud sadly, “He knows it was me.”

“And how would he know that, Phoenix Seraphina?” Tobias asks, crossing his arms over his chest like a disapproving father.

“He … has been calling me … for information.” I sigh.

“Phoenix Seraphina —”

“I did not tell him anything,” I snap, “Give me your cell phone.”

“I’m gonna regret this,” Tobias sighs, handing me his phone. I dial my father’s number.

“Phoenix Seraphina, where are you?” Dad’s growling voice has yet to not anger me.

“I am eating. What else would I do at night?” I lie with slight irritation, “Why are you attacking right now? It is still too early.”

“Oh, alright, if you say so. I will call off the attack. Goodbye.”

“Goodbye.” I hang up, throwing the phone on the ground, and stomping on it till it was completely destroyed. I looked out the window, watching as the Demons ran quickly away. I let out a sigh of relief, sliding down until I couldn’t any more.

“Well? What are you thinking?” Tobias asks, sitting down beside me.

“What have I gotten myself into?”

“You’re gonna have to think of something to tell him,” Tobias says, rolling his eyes.

“Oh, yeah,” I say sarcastically, “Hey, Dad! Sorry, but I do not have any useful information on the Vampire Royalty. But, hey, did you know that my best friend is Prince Blaze?”

“You forgot to mention that you secretly like him.”

Blaze smirks, rolling his eyes. “Understandable. I am a catch.”

“Remind me why you put up with his bad-boy attitude?” Tobias asks, rolling his eyes, “And why you don’t you slap him across the face?”

“Because I’m awesome, right Pixie?” Blaze grins, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

“Are they always like this?” Tobias asks, looking at Abel.

“Not until recently.”

“Blaze,” I say, looking at him. His arm drops awkwardly. “So, what should I tell my father?”

“Tell him the truth,” Abel says innocently.

“Abel, it is not that simple. My father is a heartless, blood-thirsty man who lives for the misfortune of others,” I say with a frown at the small, innocent boy. “Let me put it to you this way: He will reach down your throat and pull out your heart without a second thought.”

Abel gulped with fright, eyes wide with terror at the image I deacribed for him.

“No, wait, I think Abel’s on to something,” Tobias says, smirking at my clueless expression. “You’re supposed to be digging for information about the Vampire family, right? Well, what better way than getting close to Prince Blaze?”

“I’m right here,” Blaze snaps, obviously not liking the idea of being pointed out.

“Give me a number of how many girls you’ve fucked since you were born, and then you can complain,” Tobias fires right back. “Face it, Phoenix Seraphina, we’re Demons. It’s in our nature to flirt, fuck, and all those other sins.”

I glare at him, not liking where he was headed either. “My father is not a fool, and should not be underestimated. He will see right through my lies, and have guards ordered to send me back to Hell.”

Tobias rolls his eyes, grumbling to himself. “So what’s your brilliant plan, your majesty?”
