Part XII: New students

I race out of chem and into my next class
Criminal Justice
my absolute favorite class
I love this class because it's getting me ready for my future career
you see about a month after Danny died I realized some thing
My crying wasn't ever going to bring him back
all my crying wasn't helping anyone
I wasn't saving anyone from Danny's fate

Mrs. Warbeck called me to the front of the room
floppy hair in her youngish face
"I'm giving out shadow assignments today,"
she was trying hard to keep from smiling
Shadow-
It's this awesome program with the local police
Students who have exceptional grades and are serious in their ambition
get to Shadow a officer bimonthly
"you've got Detective Wilton"
she blurted

My mouth fell slightly open
"Seriously?!'
He was the most high up and the hardest to get to shadow
I had been working all year to get him

I thanked Mrs. Warbeck
and let Natalie yank me over to my desk
Oh my god, Oh my god, Oh my god
"What"
half sighing a little annoyed
She babbled
"well obviously you have no idea what I'm talking about or you wouldn't even be asking."
the bell rang
students came chattering thru the door
Natalie rolled her eyes
"Ugh, fine they both have this class anyway"

"What!" I call after her exasperated
Mrs. Warbeck calls for attention
clicking the chalk against the chalk board writing out a long assignment
In a few minutes I'm working so hard I barely hear the door open
I ignore the hushed voices
