Missing Eternity

LI: Peter

"Oh,"
Was all I said.
He snorted
"Really, you were all gung ho a minute ago."
I glared
"I just surprised."
And I definitely was
my mouth had gone dry
my heart had sped up
but I didn't let it show
I grabbed my spoon and dug it into the frozen yogurt, but barely tasted the over sweetened stuff, this crap is supposed to be healthy?
"So then answer me, what is her purpose?"
Dustin watched me resting his chin in his palm
"I don't know exactly, But I've got an idea."
"Alright then shoot."
I grumbled
"I think they're in it for money."
I wrinkled my eyebrows.
"You mean like a bounty hunter?"
"Yeah,"
My face must have looked incredulous
"why else would they be around,"
He interjects
"I mean they didn't know my friend, they’re obviously not part of the police."
He had an odd look on his face
I recognized it as relief
He didn't just think they were he knew it
and he finally could tell somebody.
But the moron hadn't stopped to think why I'd met them
or did he already know?

"Wait a sec,"
He looks at me in confusion
It almost fools me
"Why were they talking to you."
He knows.
I straighten up and pretend not to notice
furrowing my eyebrows
"Same as you."
But I'm still ticked beneath
"What was your friend's name."
I ask innocently,
nibbling another bite of my yogurt and leaning back
Pain
real this time crosses his face.
"Peter, Peter Fitzpatrick."
"Is that Irish?"
I blurted,
He laughs
"yeah actually it is.'
We’re both somber
"So what about you?"
He says quietly.
I hesitate
as if saying his name out loud is sealing something
a secret spoken aloud
but it wasn't
he could ask any one
most people knew me as that bitch, or the girl who knew the dead boy
"Danny Rove."

I say it with as little emotion as possible
which of course meant my voice was shaking.
Dustin looks down
he's giving me privacy to conceal my face
it’s a quite honorable thing actually
which of course ticks me off.
