Chapter 2: the dream
He awoke on the floor in front of his wheel chair. Everything appeared as it had before except this time the wall that had the deep dark grooves was a solid wall. He reached his hand up to the table above him. Using the table he pulled himself up to his feet and walked over to the wall. He looked it over thoroughly running his hands over the spot. “What... I was sure this wall had those grooves in it. Where’d they go?” He said to himself.
A big burly hand grabbed a hold of Dexter’s shoulder. Startled, Dexter whirled around wide eyed looking at a rough looking man. In a thick Russian accent the man said, “What are you doing?” looking down at the man’s feet not knowing what to say. He eventually managed to mutter out “Err um nothing.”
Dexter’s eyes looked over the man from head to toe. The man was in the same sort of clothing he was in. He had grey hair, brown eyes, and teeth were missing. The only remaining teeth in the man’s head had the appearance of mud. His nose was flat as if it was broken to many times. The man’s biceps were the size of bowling balls connected to forearms that resembled steel beams. His hands of the man were as large as softballs. The knuckles were like solid golf balls protruding from the ends of his fist.
“You should come with me” the Russian said as he turned around. Dexter quickly sped up to try and keep up with him. “Wait where do you plan on taking me to?” the Russian said nothing and continued to walk. The door to room opened up without him needing a key card. Robert was perplexed slightly at that. “The nurse needed a key card how come you don’t?”
The Russian continued to lead, remaining quiet. The hallway they were walking down seemed strangely familiar.
“Are we almost there?”
The futile attempts at getting the Russian to answer were beginning to set in. He grew disheartened and followed closely behind.
The two of them walked for a little bit longer before the Russian rounded the corner. They were both standing still looking at a solid steel door like the one to the room that Dexter met the Russian. The Russian walked up to the door like he did previously before. A sudden vibration rumbled through the door shaking it as it opened up showing a room with surgical equipment.
There was a surgical table made of a steel like substance in the center of the room. It had holes which opened up to a pan underneath that funneled into a drain. A cart with wheels attached was next to the surgical table. It had a blue cloth laid across the width of it. Tools that were used for operations lay across in a perfect symmetry from large instruments to small.
“What are we doing here?” Dexter asked as he looked around the room touching some of the tools on the cloth covered table. “You should know very well what we are doing here.” The Russian said looking sternly at Dexter.
The lights in the operating room began to dim. The sounds of people walking towards the room echoed violently within Dexter’s skull. He grabbed his head with his hands pushing trying to alleviate the pressure building within. The lights were violently flashing. Grunting from the pain he fell to his knees still pressing his hands hard against his temples. “Make it stop. Make it stop.” He screamed in agony, but no one was helping him.
When the pains subsided he noticed that the room he was in had changed. The operating table and cart were the same but there was a person strapped down to the table. “What the…” he got to his feet and walked over to the person on the table. He stood staring down on the person but he couldn’t figure what it was. The arms were disfigured and were strapped down with one strap on the wrist and one on the bicep. The thing was missing its right leg and the left was strapped similar to the arms. The ankle and the quadriceps area were strapped tightly to the table.
The patient began to grunt and fidget around on the table trying to loosen the straps as the surgeons approached the table from the doorway.
“William I want you to prepare the saw for me” one of the surgeons said as looked down on the patient. Eagerly William went to the cart and grabbed the slim surgical saw. He handed it to the other surgeon. “Here you are doctor.”
Grasping the saw in his hand tightly his eyes scanned over the patient drawing an imaginary cutting line on its left forearm. “Watch closely William.” The doctor placed the jagged end of the saw on the arm and pressed down as it slides through the patients arm. Grunting in agony the patient squirmed around as the doctor continued sawing deeper and deeper into its arm.
When the bottom half of the arm was severed from the rest of the arm the doctor called William over to his side. “Take this.” He said handing William the arm. “Put this in the ice chest.” Removing the lid to the chest he carefully placed the arm into the ice and completely covered it.
“Where would you like me to take this?” “I want you to take that and put it in the freezer.”
William nodded his head and put the lid back on top the chest.
The room began to shift again turning back to the empty room. The same feelings shot through Dexter’s head as they had before. He placed his hands to his temples and pressed as hard as he could.
When the pain had subsided he was standing next to the Russian squeezing his head. The Russian was watching Dexter intently. “come I have more you need to see.” “What else is there?” Dexter asked taking his hands away from his head. The Russian walked through the opened door leaving the room. “You need to see the rest of this facility. It’s important.” “What now” Dexter said Grumbling. The Russian was moving faster than he did before. It felt like something terrible was about to happen, like the doors would seal and never be opened again.
Speeding down the halls Dexter asked “what was up with what I saw back there?” “You saw what you had to see” the Russian said as they rounded the corner. They stood before another door way. “I don’t have time to show you this room” the Russian quickly said. “This room they use to eliminate the…” before the Russian could finish everything went blank.
