You're a good Friend

Sammi didn’t get how Jake could take all this…this ridicule. Kids that he talked to had turned their backs, ones that he didn’t were completely awful. Even some of the kids at our OWN table shunned him, or else they treated him different. And he took every insult, every look, with poise, pride. But, even though Jake dealt with it, Sam, Sammi, and Savanna certainly didn’t have to.
“You wanna say that to our faces, jerk?” spit Savanna to an especially nasty comment as the group walked home. The offender walked away, but Savanna would have none of that. She walked right behind him, cursing him out in every way possible. She looked as if she was ready to punch the guy, Sammi knew she was, and by the way Sam looked, so did he. Before Savanna could do anything drastic, Jake pulled her back. She looked at him with fire in her eyes, but he shook his head. She sighed and walked off a bit, wrapping her arms around herself and trying to cool off.
“I better go check on her.” Jake told Sam and Sammi, and they nodded in agreement. Actually, Sammi was hoping he was. Savanna looked pissed and she had quite a temper. Last time she had been this angry, well, three football players got broken noses. Sammi didn’t want to have to deal with that agai-
Sam looked at Sammi curiously.
“He doesn’t care?” Sam asked. Sammi shook her head.
“He cares plenty. But Jake knows that they just want to hurt him. And so he pretends he doesn’t care. But he does, believe me.”
“You’re a good friend.” Sammi blushed.
“..thank you.”
Sam took her hand.
“You really are.” He took her other and stared into her eyes. And he kissed her. It was quick, a light peck, if that. Sammi smiled into the kiss and when they broke away, Sam took her hand. They didn’t say anthing to each other, but it wasn’t an awkward silence. It was nice.
