I'm a Teenage Girl Teaching at an All Boys School for Delinquents

Fish and Chips

I sighed and laid back into my chair. I finally had some downtime with my friends but I couldn’t relax. It turns out that Jace and Mathew had indeed been fighting. Mathew had a broken finger and Jace escaped with only minor cuts and bruises. Mathew had been pretty upset that Ruth had stepped in to stop them. I didn’t know what I was going to do, Sean seemed pretty smug when he got back to class, no doubt the winner was Jace due to his lack of injury and that had boosted Sean’s ego along with Jace’s. I groaned, getting engulfed in my worried.

“Uh. Lex, you ok?” I heard David ask concerned, I smiled half heart-heartedly at him,

“Yea. Just getting buried alive in my anxiety.” He bit his lip,

“I don’t think it’s healthy for you to work there.” Sydney informed me; I looked at my hands,

“Yea. All this worrying is going to give you wrinkles sweetness. You don’t wanna go old granny on me at the age of 27 now do you?” David chimed trying to cheer me up. I laughed,

“Thanks for your concern guys but Lexi here is perfectly fine because she’s got the bad ass Ruth here to help her.” I rolled my eyes,

“But there was a fight on the first day you were working! That doesn’t really give a good first impression!” She shrugged, I then remembered something, “Do you know Maxi?” Ruth stiffened. I narrowed my eyes, Sydney and David watched the scene unfolding in front of them, they had no idea who I was talking about but they were suckers for good gossip,

“W-Well...”

“Well?”

“That son of a bitch is my brother.” Ruth snarled at a wall, “That stupid prick turned into a major asshole when he started hanging out with this guy named James, he started drinking and all that.” I stayed silent,

“What did he do to get put in Hathaway high?” She gritted her teeth,

“Apparently James convinced him it would be cool to destroy the school, so he did. He broke everything in the computer lab, luckily most of the computers where getting replaced anyway. Then one night he was drunk and decided to go out for a little joy ride, well he got caught by the cops and got put for drunk driving. They took his finger prints to put on his record and found that they matched the ones from the computers back at school. So he got expelled and put in Hathaway High.” I stayed silent, taking it all in.

“I don’t remember any of this happening at our school.” David pointed out, Ruth shook her head,

“Maxi went to a private school, not our school.” I nodded my head. I clapped my hands together and smiled, it’s a habit of mine, it’s meant to help break the tense feelings,

“I don’t think that we should be talking about how suckish my job is when I’ve got all my best buds with me.” I sighed a little, “Can we just talk about something else?” Sydney squealed,

“Ok! I’ve got something to tell you all!” We all leaned forward, including David, Sydney clasped her hands together grinning, “You have to promise not to freak out.” We all nodded, “I’m. Getting.... A new car!” David gasped in fake shock,

“No! Just like every month!” Sydney glared at him, I smiled at my friends sudden change in mood. All thoughts about work drifted from my mind waiting to be thought about in the near future.

I squealed as smoke appeared from my oven. It was 5pm and I was cooking dinner.. well... trying. I coughed as I took out my burning chicken, I sighed and dropped it into the sink. I just wasn’t in the right state of mind to try cooking something else.

“Witney! Get a jacket on! We’re eating out!” I sighed and put a jacket over my polka-dot dress. I quickly brushed my hair, I decided to wear it down. I quickly applied my makeup and yelled for Witney to hurry up. I sighed and looked at the clock, it had been 20 minutes since I told her we were going out. I growled and stormed to her room, I opened her door to find her asleep on her bed. I sighed, looks like it’s testing time again at school. Whenever this happened, Witney always seemed to fall asleep early, that’s understandable since she stays up all night studying until she passes out. I smiled slightly and wrote a little note telling her that I’ll be home with her dinner soon. I left her my mobile number even though she already had it and left.
I locked the door and jogged to my car, it was freezing out. I fumbled with the keys, looks like today was just going to be one of those days. I jumped inside my car when it finally opened; I put the key in and tried to start it... Only... It didn’t start. I growled and tried it again. It took 3 try’s to get the stupid machine to start. I sighed and pulled out of the car park. I sped down the road until i finally found a place that was good enough to buy some decent food; I found a parking space and took the key out of the ignition. I took in a deep breath, readying myself for the debilitating change of air I was about to face. I quickly opened the door and closed it. I locked it as fast as I could, shivering violently, I ran into the heated store.
I sighed in content as the heat hit me, along with the smell of food. I looked at what they had to offer. It wasn’t much, it was just a fish and chip shop after all. I decided to order just plain fish and chips after all. I waltzed up to the counter, I realised that it wasn’t all that busy; I would have thought that it would be packed at this time of night. I shrugged; a boy with messy blonde hair approached the cash register. I smiled kindly at him,

“C-Can I take your order?” I opened my eyes to come face to face with some very familiar pair of blue eyes,

“Sean?” His forced smile dropped,

“Oh, hey teach.” I rolled my eyes,

“Call me Lexi out of class.” He looked at me confused,

“Um. Ok? But, are you gonna order or am I going to have to ask you to leave.” I smirked,

“Fine fine. Can I just have some fish and chips please?” He nodded and turned back around; he shouted my order to someone who shouted back to him. He sighed and scratched the back of his head awkwardly. “So,” I finally cooed, breaking the awkward silence, “you work here?” He rolled his eyes,

“Well done Captain obvious.” I pursed my lips,

“You didn’t have to be so sarcastic. I was just making conversation.” He sighed,

“I know. I’m sorry.” I froze out of shock. ‘I’m sorry’? I’ve never heard him apologise before! Then it hit me, I was having a normal conversation with the guy who sulked around all day. A blush formed of my cheeks and he looked at me puzzled, “What’s wrong?” I jumped,

“Oh! Uh, n-nothing.” He pointed at me,

“But you’ve gone all red.” I looked at the ground, trying to come up with a believable lie.

“U-Uh....”

“Order up!” I heard someone shout. I grinned and snatched my food off him,

“I will see you tomorrow Mr. Carlton.” He scowled at me as I spun around to start walking out the door. I jumped when something grabbed my coat; I turned around to see Sean leaning over the counter. He looked me in the eye, we stayed like that for a moment, he then realised that he was still holding onto me and let go, a faint pink creeping up his neck. He muttered something while staring down at the counter,

“Hm?” I asked,

“I said you should wear your hair down more often.... I-It looks nice...” My mouth hung open slightly, he looked up and scowled at me, “I can be nice you know! No need to act so surprised.” He growled and turned his back to me. I smiled,

“Thank you.”

“Whatever.” I grinned and walked out of the store, I completely forgot about the temperature difference. I ran to my car and fumbled with the keys. I finally got the door open and I slipped inside the small space, closing the door behind me. I tried to start the car... but once again I faced a little set back... IT WOULDN’T START! I let out a frustrated cry and shot a glance towards the window of the fish and chip shop, Sean was staring at me with an amused expression on his face. I stuck my tongue out at him and he seemed to chuckle.

“Damn it all...” I mumbled as I pulled out my phone to call the Joshua.

“Hello?” Came a cheery voice,

“Come pick me up.”

“What?”

“I said come pick me up.”

“Why?” He whined, “It’s freezing outside and I’m nice and warm sitting in front of my T.V. I’m watching NCIS. It’s the one where they find a body in the dumpster. Who would be stupid enough just to leave a body in a-“

“Well while you’re having a wonderful time sitting in front of you stupid T.V.” I interrupted, “I’m broken down in front of a shop freezing my ass off!” It went silent,

“Well when you put it like that then I think I’ll come and get you.” I told him where I was and hung up. Leaving me with nothing to think about other then Sean’s comment, ‘You should wear your hair down more often... I-It looks nice.’. And then there was Ruth’s comment from school, ‘We’ll talk about this later.’. I groaned. Sometimes I just wished I could have a normal teenage life.
