Faded

Never Again

I wake up in the morning, Pepper on my stomach, beside the sidewalk. No one noticed, because no one cares. I head toward home and try to sort through what happened. Did I faint because of lack of food? Or what? Oh well. In the driveway is my dad's car. What's he doing here?
I walk inside, and no one is awake. My dad is asleep on the couch, his hand on the remote. It's about six a.m. and no one noticed I was gone. I go up to my room, and pretend to be sick when my mom comes to check on me. She lets me stay home. So I sleep until two, and then I go downstairs, where my father still is. A red delicious apple out of the fridge, and socked feet on the floor, silent.
"Cass?" I cringe, Pepper wags her tail. I continue back up to my room without acknowledging his presence.
Thirty minutes later he knocks on my door. "Cass?" he says again. I don't answer. He tries to push the door open. It's locked. I will not talk to him ever again.
