Hurricane

The van

‘Can we go?’ I asked, I still was kind of pissed off at my mum. She just told Aiden that I was his mum. The man nodded, I still didn’t know his name.

‘I will help her with her suitcases Phil’, said Irina and grabbed my hand.

‘They’re already outside’, I said to her, while she dragged me to the hallway. She looked confused to me but shrugged her shoulders and walked out the front door. She grabbed one of my suitcases and walked to the van.

It was ocean blue at the front and a darker blue at the back. She opened the trunk and put my suitcases on top of the other ones.

‘Geez, what’s in those suitcases of yours? Bricks?’ She asked a little out of breath. With a smile I shook my head.

‘something heavier, books’, I said and she began to laugh.

‘That explains a lot. I think it’s time to say goodbye to you mother and little brother’ I nodded. I took a deep breath and walked to my mother and Aiden, who were standing at the front door. I kneeled down and held Aiden close to me. I didn’t want to leave him behind, not my little boy.

‘I’m gonna miss you mummy’, he whispered softly in my ear.

‘I will miss you to Aiden’, I answered. I kissed him on his forehead and stood up. With an emotionless face I looked at my mother.

‘I won’t forget what you’ve done to me today, mother’, I said in a cold voice. She looked hurt, and that was exactly my meaning. I won’t forgive her so easily.

‘I never expected’, she answered, suddenly angry. I tightened my fist, trying to control my sudden fury. I turned around and walked to the van, with Aiden behind me.

‘Watch out!’ Kai yelled and quickly I turned around, only to see a large wave coming at me.

I pushed Aiden behind me and let my mind reach to water. Within less than a second I had all the water controlled and stopped it a couple of centimeters in front of me. I gathered a bit of my strength and pushed it back at my mum, but with much more force. It was too much for her and the wave crashed over her. I let the water sink into the ground and watched as my mother stood up.

‘If something is wrong Aiden, you have to call, understand?’ I asked and he nodded.

With a last kiss I stepped into the van. I nodded to Phil, who started the engine and drove off. I watched as Aiden and my mother become smaller as we drove further away.

I let out a heavy sigh and rested my head to the cold window. I felt Kai staring to me. I looked at him and quickly he looked away. Irina was in the front seat, leaving me with Kai in the back. Oh boy, that would be fun.

‘Can I ask what that was all about?’ Irina said a little shocked. I only shrugged my shoulders.

‘Maybe later Ina, but not now’ she nodded. She understood that I didn’t want to talk about it right know. In silence we drove further. I took my Sony walkman out of my pocket and started to listen to my favorite songs. Kelly Clarkson always made me relax a bit.

‘Do you want to know what my gift is Cas?’ Irina asked suddenly. I took my earphones out and nodded.

‘I’m a shape shifter’, and with that the transforms into a white cat with black paws.

‘Amazing, you look really cute Ina’ , I said to her, and stroked her head. She started to purr. I smiled at sat back. She transformed back to her normal self.

‘Yeah I know. Kai makes fun of me when I’m in that form. But I love it’, she said with a huge smile. Kai only groaned a little.

He apparently wasn’t a real talker. But why did I care. He didn’t look nice to me, or someone I could trust. After that we went silent again and just looked at the landscape glide past us. I wondered how the school would really look like.

Mum had told me a little about it, but it is always different when you actually see it. For example, my mother talked about some house in the village, because she liked it so much, but when I finally saw it, it was really different than what she told me. Would the teachers be nice? Would they also be gifted or would they be normal people? Where a couple of the questions I asked myself.

‘I’m bored’, Irina yelled suddenly. Kai and I jumped of our seats from her sudden outburst, and Phil led the car made a sharp turn to the right, followed by a couple of honks from other drivers.

‘Don’t ever do that again Irina’, Phil brought out between his teeth. She immediately turned a bright red.

‘I’m sorry’, she murmured. Phil nodded and turned his attention back to the road.

‘I have some cards in my suitcase, we could play a card game?’ I asked unsure. She nodded happily and climbed over her seat to the back and placed herself between me and Kai.

‘Come on, go get them!’ she said impatient. I quickly bent over our seat and searched to one of my suitcases. After two of the three suitcases I found them in the last one.

With a bit of a red head, because I had to bent down and the blood flowed to my head, I sat down and gave the cards to Irina. She began to shook the cards and gave each one of us seven of them.

We started playing and Kai won the first set. I was last. The next set I won, and was Irina last. The game went on till Phil turned off the highway to a little truck stop.

‘Time to get ready for tonight’, he said and all of us looked a bit of scared to the truck stop. Are we going to sleep here? With all those truckers?

‘Not again Phil. Why can’t we sleep in a motel or something, everything is better that a truck stop’, Irina said in a whining voice.

Apparently they stayed a few times in a truck stop earlier.

‘You have to blame Principal Lighter, he didn’t give me enough money to stay in a motel. He only gave money for the fuel, and for food. You know the principal is a greedy man’, he said apologetic. Irina and Kai nodded. They knew the principal longer, I didn’t.

I opened the door of the van and walked with Irina behind Kai and Phil, inside the truck stop. It was really quiet, only a few truckers where inside. Most of them where sitting around a large table, probably looking for some company. Only a few where sitting alone.

Phil and Kai walked to a table at a window and Irina and I followed without a complaint. The flat screen TV hanging on the wall was on the news, and the news reader was talking about some conference of the president in Russia. Not really something important.

‘You can do something for yourself guys. There is a big game tonight on the TV that I won’t want to miss. Play a game, take a shower, do something but leave me alone. I have been enough with you today’, we nodded and stood up.

Irina and I decided to take a shower and after that I would call my mum, to make it up with her. Guilt was overflowing me, and I know I overreacted a bit.

I grabbed my pajamas and my toiletries while Irina grabbed hers. We walked to the part where the showers where. I locked the door when we were inside, I didn’t want that any truckers would walk in while we were showering.
