James Viero is from District One in the country of Panem. For generations, his people have been trained for the annual Hunger Games: a competition in which the only way a person can win is to be the last person alive.

Unluckily for him, James hates all forms of violence and fighting. Still, he goes through his training to keep from getting into trouble without voicing his concerns.

Then, when he turns sixteen, the unbelievable happens: his name is drawn during the Reaping. Will James be able to swallow his hatreds and his fears in order to come out on top?
