Storm Before The Calm

“Size 6.” a bubbly pre-teen girl giggled, handing the worker her neon pink Converse. Her friend beside her in the Justin Bieber shirt was already putting on her skates, lacing them in the wrongest way possible. The teenager took her shoes, exchanging them with size six skates, which she set on the counter. The girl’s name was Olivia Dean. She was an eighteen year old girl and a beautiful one at that. Her blonde hair hung around her face and her blue eyes sparkled with life. She was a huge hockey fan and she loved how excited she got when she saw those skates cross the counter.

“Five dollars.” she spoke. The younger girl handed Olive a twenty, obviously given to her by her parents. Olive handed her the change and she shoved it in her back pocket, the perfect place for it to be stolen. Her friend, stood and wobbled in the skates that she had tied so incorrectly.

“C'mon Jessica. I'll tie your skates for you.” Miss Bieber suggested.

The blonde behind the counter stifled a laugh as she put the money in the register. She was working the small outdoor skate rink in front of the Marriott in downtown Raleigh, which was a street across from the convention center. It was the day before the All-Star weekend and she knew that things were going to be crazy as hell the next day. Her best friend, Allyson, and she were on shift tomorrow, along with Mike. They were all aware that people would be ask for directions, rent skates, and need more than one person to man the booth. All being hockey fans, they were excited to see some of their favorite players in town. Personally, Olive was disappointed that Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin couldn't show up. Although the Hurricanes were her main team, which is opposite from her parents, the Penguins are a close second. However, her boss wanted everyone to remain neutral during this weekend, she sported an All-Star Weekend hoodie.

Her blue eyes flicked to Jessica and Miss Bieber through her sunglasses and they looked like they needed assistance. They were pulling the laces like it was tug-of-war.
“Hey guys. Do you need some help lacing those skates?” she offered, politely. They looked up at the older girl, glaring. She felt their gaze like they were piercing her with knives.

“No.” Jessica spat, picking at her peace sign scarf. Olive couldn’t help but wonder if she was that unbearable to be around when she was in middle school? She ignored them and turned the page of the book that was assigned for Medical Science III. She was hoping to get a job in sports medicine, so she was reading a chapter and writing notes for class. The new semester just started for her Senior year and she was studying because she took her education seriously. She hummed a tune that was playing from the radio.

“Excuse me, ma'am. Do you know where the Convention Center is?” a voice asked. She looked up to see a blonde man with sunglasses and a Flip camera in his hand. It wasn't particularly aimed on her, but it wasn't turned from her either. She nodded, pushing her sunglasses up on to forehead. The blondes made eye contact and she flashed him her award winning smile, which he graciously returned. He smelled like cologne and she couldn’t help but inhaling a long breath of the luscious aroma.

“Sure! You see the Marriot, right there and you see the little Krispy Kreme shop?” He nodded.

“That street between them leads right to it. That building back there is the Convention Center.” She pointed, leaning against the counter, going back to her textbook.

“Thank you so much. Believe it or not, I would have been completely lost, but now I feel stupid because it’s the next street over.” he laughed. She laughed too, placing her sunglasses back on.

“No problem. Just come back to see me if you have any more questions. I'll be here until ten.” Olive offered. He smiled again and she rested her chin on her hand.

“Thank you again.” he replied.

“No problem, Mr. Kane.” Olive smiled as she returned to her book. He winked and walked away.
